The best within budget are Tekton Moabs. I have them, you will not find better until at least twice your budget. Absolutely the best midrange, period. No way you will find better dialog than this. Big, full, tight and articulate bass- not at all bloated. Easy to drive at 98dB. One foot from the wall is a minimum but doable. Well, since this is for movies/TV viewing, I will tell you that many smallish "hi-fi" speakers are dynamically limited, especially when you are looking at speakers of the size you are wanting. They often have a 5" or smaller mid range driver. They may be great for many genres of music, but may not have the gusto you want for home theater.
For home theater, I would look into the new JBL HDI series. I think they have a tower that would meet your size needs.

I did listen to the JBL 3 way L100 Classics and they had too much bass and not as clear with dialog. I looked on JBL HDI 3600, they are a solid speaker at 61 lbs. They are a couple of inches too tall and an inch too wide, but might be able to make them work. Will have to go listen to them. Hopefully the local stereo store has them to listen to. Thanks |
Keep the 710's! Especially if only for movies/tv. See if you can move them around a bit to reduce bass. I use 710's in my TV room, they work well for my purposes. YMMV.

Mcondo, I like the ADS and also have a pair of ADS 690s (had to replace a woofer in one of them) that I used to like even better, but the Mrs. doesn't like the bass of the 710s when there are explosions in a movie or any big action.

In general, you probably would like a lot of 2.5 way speakers. How about Monitor Audio?

Floor Speakers Speakers for Movies / TV Big panel speakers to give big effortless sound. A pair of old Magneplaner Tympani 1D’s come to mind, they’ll do the bass too so no subs needed, then you something like a Maggie 1.7 on it’s side for the centre channel under the screen to match the mains. The of course the rears have to be Maggie SMg’s or .7’s That should envelope, "wash over you" in surround sound, without being too obvious or forceful. George, the Maggie's are all too big for the space. I agree I would like them because I really wanted to get the Martin Logan ESLs when I heard them, but just don't have the space.

How big is your room? How far are you from the TV and speakers?
Maybe you could use a pair of stand mounts that roll off the lower octave. |

Jrosemd, those definitve technology speakers are 50.5 inches tall. The bottom of my TV is 36 inches from the floor, so they are too tall. there is a doorway about 8 inches to the right of the TV so I need speakers that fit under the TV. Also, I would be afraid a 12" sub in it would give too much rumble. I have been looking at towers with speakers 6" or less to get away from that rumble, because the wife doesn't like it. Plus it typically makes it more difficult to understand dialog. I bet they do sound great though.
Mesch, the room is actually pretty big. Probably around 38 feet long and 25 feet wide, with cathedral ceiling and balcony open to the 2nd floor. We sit about 15 feet from the TV. To top it off , have to be careful about a speaker sticking out into the doorway to the right of the TV because when the dogs get excited they go running past that doorway. 125 pound Great Pyrenees are not so concerned about what they destroy when go running by. it was my first Pyr that destroyed my ADS 690 speakers as he would send it flying when he would run by. And he was the most gentle of them. |
Wow, sounds like you need a floor standing speaker that is less than 36" and narrow. There are many. Also you might need speakers that could accommodate outriggers to bolt them to the floor. |
Check with Underwood HiFi. They usually have a number of tall thin speakers that they bought on close outs and pass along the savings.
Now, that said, even monkey coffins (enclosed speakers) need to be some distance from the corners/front wall
I have my speakers resting on Harbor Freight dollys, which makes them easy to pul out and push back

Mesch, you are correct. It's a tight space, but would work for mini towers.
Tweaks, I went on to underwoodhifi and am struggling to figure out their site. They don't have a section for just speakers. I just see a section for recommended systems when I selected speakers |
