I’m just gonna guess that you’re gonna need a higher quality streamer to get the benefits you are desiring out of an ethernet switch.
EtherREGEN or LHY SW-6? Anyone compare the 2? Thoughts/opinions?
Hi, All,
So just when I was ready to pull the trigger on the EthgerREGEN, at the last minute I came across the LHY SW-6. Thanks to all who took the time to respond to my previous post about adding an Ethernet switch/power supply.
The only 2 pcs that will be connected to the switch is my streamer (Eversolo DMP-A6 Master) and a Brennan B2 CD Ripper. I also just added 2 Ethernet cables from Pine Tree Audio (solid stuff very reasonable prices)
My final decision has come down to these 2. Both are same cost-wise and I have read great things about both. Anyone compare the 2 or have any opinion as to which direction to go? My only concern is that the EtherREGEN runs very hot. I've always felt that something that runs hot may have a shorter shelf life?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and time...
Thank you @audiom3. Very helpful! I was just about to pull the trigger on ER, like I said, but now I'm leaning towards LHY. I read about the 10, but unfortunately it's a bit out of range...Appreciate your time and advance my friend |
I have the LHY SW-6. I was attracted to the linear power supply and did not want to have the $15 switch (with switching PS) connected to my streamer. I find the product to be very well built and it runs warm but not hot. Never had an issue with it. My system was a few upgrades behind where I am now when I installed it so I can not say it made a huge difference. I was in the phase of removing unwanted noise and was adding in some Shunyata power cables as well. My recollection was that the cables and switch slightly reduced background noise and cleaned up the upper end as well. For the money it seemed worthwhile - I think I paid around $600 for the switch. Please keep us posted regarding your purchase. |
@maxwave Thank you. Yes sometime in June I understand the ER G2 will be out. I think if I go with ER I’ll go with the original.
@12many Thank you very much, also very helpful! Appreciate the honesty. I Speke with Alvin at Vinshine (customer service doesn’t get any better than Alvin and Vinshine) and he said the SW-6 is a great match with the Eversolo. Alvin is nothing if not honest. I too am using Shunyata Delta V2 on my DAC and Processor. I have an excellent DH Labs power cable I’ll be using on the SW-6. Definitely leaning in the direction of the SW-6 and will post once I make the call…
Thanks to All for your time and advice! |
@maxwave I also spoke with Alex from UpTone and the Gen2 will be in very high demand and hard to get. It’ll sell out quick. The heat generated by the ER is what concerns me. Plus I don’t want to wait that long. Right now the Gen 1 is in stock and ready to ship. |
+1 for LHY. Etheregen initially sounds like its offering improved clarity, but to my ears the sound is a bit un natural, brittle and tiring after a while, which is not uncommon in my experience with media convertors. It is improved with the afterdark clock, but personally I prefer the etheregen coming in and and out of the "a" side using it like a tradtional switch. and avoiding the "moat". Things have moved on quite a bit since the ER came out and the LHY is beautifully made and more importantly has a far more balanced, natural sound and realistic sound stage, is also times a lot better which is hard to find in switches. Obvs just my two cents and i know theres a lot of love out there for the ER |
@teknorob23 thank you! Very helpful! I am definitely leaning heavily towards the LHY. Still have not pulled the trigger but I've pretty much decided on the LHY. Yes there is a lot of love for the ER but you're analysis seems spot on, thank you very much for sharing. |
@fthompson251 I was originally looking at SW-8 and came across the SW-6. Alvin from Vinshine said the SW-6 was a much better unit. AND it has the isolated port similar to the ER. SW-6 all the way man! |
I laid a digital thermometer on my Uptone this morning and 12 hours later it read 97F. For reference, I laid it next to the regen for an hour and it read 77F (room temp). It felt coffee mug hot to the touch. 97F is nothing. Hell, we’re 98.6! |
@wlutke Thats interesting. So it helped the video but not the audio? I don’t stream any video. @oddiofyl Thank you, most everyone speaks to the build quality of the SW-6. In the grand scheme of things I feel like the possible benefits vs cost of this unit (especially with so many referencing build quality) is not really a big risk. I’ve certainly spent MUCH more on components/tweaks without auditioning… |
Yes. It could be the WW Starlight 8 spdif I used at the time was the limiting audio factor. The quality jumped with the WW Starlight silver spdif and jumped again with the WW platinum usb. Some of that improvement could be the cable/format releasing the potential of the regen but the video upgrade is so profound that I’m not motivated to experiment. The regen is staying where it is. Just had a thought. Maybe a second regen just before the n200? I’ll experiment with my planned future giga regen since I’ll have two. |

More EtherRegen trivia: I just tried "a" siding both ethernet cables, skipping the moat as per teknorob23. The video went flat and plain. It was so obvious I switched them back immediately. The moat does work, at least for video, where it's indispensable. Now I'm impatiently awaiting a LHY vs Gen 2 audio comparison! |
I had the LHY SW-6 and it’s really good for the money. It brings a relaxed and calming effect to things. I do not recommend using the isolated port though, the normal ports seem more transparent. But I now have the new Matrix Audio SS-1 Pro switch and it’s substantially better than the SW-6. It is $1700 but imo well worth the extra money if you can swing it. There is one review of the Matrix switch on Soundnews and the reviewer much preferred it over the LHY SW-10 and Melco switches. I am very keen to try the upcoming ER2 but it been held up for years. |

Happy Etherregen owner along with an Afterdark clock, cable, LPS. Bought the package used and it definitely improved the SQ. I have it elevated with 2 Nobsound spring base footers and the heatsinks (see the link) to cool it down. Although mine doesn’t seem that hot. These heatsinks fit perfectly on top and look great. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08VDX7NNG?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title |
Thanks for sharing @agisthos. Appreciate the tip on the isolated port. Fortunately where I plan on placing the SW-6 will be easy access (the rest of my components require me to transform into a contortionist to get near them🤦🏼♂️) so I’ll be able to play around with this. Unfortunately even the SW-6 is stretching my budget a bit so I’ll have to be satisfied with this unit-which I’m sure I will be.
@tksteingraber thanks for taking the time to reply. I have not come across any negative reviews of the ER, I’ve just come across many more that rave about the SW-6. I was literally just about to pull the trigger on the ER when I saw the SW-6. Now I’m heavily leaning in that direction. Plus with the Gen 2 in the works, knowing myself if I buy the G1, I’ll end up wanting the G2 when it finally hits the market🤦🏼♂️🔫😂. So if I go with the SW-6 I can pull the trigger and never look back (or forward)…
Thanks to All, love reading the replies and appreciate your time/advice! |
