Cars. What does the typical audiophile drive?

Just curious. People have asked about watches,
cigars, beer, and even ones income here.

1: What do you drive (daily & weekends)?
2: What might you be driving in the future?
3: What would you drive if $$$ was no object (pick 2 ;-)?

My answers to the above:
1: Toyota truck.
2: Newer Toyota truck.
3: Lamborghini Murcielago & McLaren F1.

I have a 1995 ford bronco--great truck --don't have to drive alot which is good because the gas mileage sucks----never been a car person -find it strange that my new ic's are worth more than my car ! :):)--rich
Typical audiophile drives bicycle with belt drive and anti vibration system. What more?
0: Past: 997 GT3
1. Now: 997.2 C2S
2. Future: Panamera Turbo (four real seats)
3. Wish List: Pagani Zonda F or Enzo 2

Still miss the GT3, it defined visceral. The extent of feedback immersed you into driving it. The definitive, modern 911.

Through a tunnel, with the engine screaming at 8400rpm, one could only construe such as beautiful "music".
BMCgoz, my 40th anniversary 996 lease is up soon and I'm debating between a CPO'd 997 GT3 or a new 997.2 C2S. Besides the higher redline, what else do you miss most about the '3? I'd imagine the extra torque of the C2S comes in handy around town...
Correction, Albert - 707! I prefer to spend my time reading more earthshattering threads here, like "which is the best speaker?". There's so much to learn on the Internet!:-P
I got sent a private email asking about driving a modified car and if I had had any problems with it. Well, I can tell you that I have had zero problems, and that car has 35,000 miles on it now. My wife drives the s____ out that thing (it has had a second, race clutch put in it). Actually, we have a 2002 Expedition as well and have had many a Ford truck over the years, and we could not think of one instance where we had ANY repairs done.

Now my experience with cars, especially foriegn sports cars/sedans has been much different. My '99 M3 convertible was a great car I guess? You see I ended up driving a 3 series loaner from the dealer all the time it was in the shop so I really couldn't tell you how great it was. The next foray into performance for me was the Porche mentioned above, and it looked nice, and I think it impressed people as I pulled it in and out of the service dept at Momentum Porche here in Houston. Actually, one of the guys on the service bay got me interested in buying and modifying a Mustang when I told him my brother restores first gen Mustangs. The service guy brought me over and showed me his personalized/modified '05 that he had less than $45k into and it had over 600HP (at the rear wheels not the flywheel), race brakes, suspension, wheels, it worked out great. Although my wife drives that car much more than I do, it's so much fun to drive I can't describe it. The power is literally awe inspiring with a supercharged engine. Last week I replaced the fuel injectors and had the guys custom tune it then: 575 HP at the wheels, 0 - 60 in 4sec flat (can't get it under 4). That's almost as fun as a turntable!!!
Macdadtexas, I love modding Mustangs. I autocrossed my '88 5.0LX for almost 15 years in the SCCA's ESP class. It was fast and fun and, as you say, I could easily blow the doors off many (most) Porsches. The car was very reliable and had only the classic Mustang weaknesses, like a repeatedly replaced heater core and other minor things.

I've gone to the dark side now and just took delivery of a 2009 BMW M3 coupe. I think of it as the ultimate Mustang handling wise. I've ordered a 4.10 rear, throttle bodies, exhaust and a couple of other tweaks to install next month. I'll probably stay normally aspirated, but like you, I'd like to break that 4-second 0-60. (We're at 4.1 as delivered).

Over at the BMW forum several dumb asses were showing their ignorance about Mustangs. I told them, "Watch out and don't get caught in the wrong gear." ;-)

Dave
DCstep, great to hear that from you. I had nothing but hearache from my beautiful, but troublesome M3. Last Sunday afternoo, on the Hard Tollroad in Houston I had the pleasure of having a guy in about an '07 Porche 4s keep reving his engine and giving me the go signal before I said OK. The look on his face as I downshifted was priceless. I just wish it had lasted longer, but he was gone so quickly.......
Dcstep, I've owned a 2002 SMG BMW M3 imola red. Very Nice but it for 335I with 20" wheels and some BMW approved mods. It's real bad ass but looks low and slow. but, boy what's hiding under that hood!

yes they did do that. I live/work in Houston and Merill's energy trading shop (they bought it from Koch Industries in '04) is here, and I still have a lot of friends there, and yes they did by toys. Their building is 20 Greenway Plaza and right in front of it is one of the biggest Mercedes dealerships in the country (check it on on GoogleEarth), and they are not hurting thanks to the continued support of the Merrill-BOA traders.

My 2009 BMW M3 coupe came out of 2008 bonus money. I put way, way more money in savings than I spent, but we DID buy the car and take a cruise. My 2009 revenue is starting significantly behind the end of 2008 pace, but there's still 10.5 months to go and I'm working several meaty prospects that could more than make up the shortfall.

After all, that's what business is about, reacting to changes and constantly reshaping the model. I look at all the market displacement as a great chance to be creative and build wealth. If you weren't entrepreneurial before, now is the time to put your ideas to work.

Dave
I'd prefer a Corvette ZR-1 and TRD supercharged Tundra 4x4. JAX FL Auto Show - appealing way understates the ZR-1. All of mine are pre-owned and in great shape, except the Tundra I bought on a new promotion. Three '96's and a 2004 truck. Black Lexis SC400 w/Nackamichi, Glacier Blue BMW R1100RT, White Trophy 1805 Walk-Around Sport Fishing Boat with cuddy cabin, and Silver Tundra fully-loaded quad-cab. And, a Cannondale Super V 700 for those 5-minute trips. Definately more than enough for me to keep my eyes on.
I drive an Audi S5. Was going to buy the Caddie CTS-V,(Real fast and refined)but the way GM is right now didn't want to take a chance.
Old Subaru Forester with over 190K miles and just routine tire rotations/alignment and oil/filter changes (o:
2004 Ford F-250, 2009 Toyo/Scion Xb(for toolin around) and when the summer rolls around a 268 Grady White Islander w/t200 Evinrude for chasing tuna and sharks.
1. 01 Acura CL (with eclipse 3200, diamond D3 amps + D6 sub, and Rainbow SLC's up front
2. BMW 3 series (original, i know), or a G35
3. Too many dream cars, but I've always wanted an EVO
2009 Volkswagen, Salsa Red, Jetta Sportwagon with a Manual transmission. Just superb, super good mileage (25, 36), enough room to haul a lot of gear. Smooth as a smelt, nobodies hotrod but quiet and packed with "Farfegnugen". Nice sound system for an entry level car, let's me attach my ipod for long drives. It's a lease I'll end up buying.
1) 2001 Mitsubishi Pajero TDI
2) 2001 Mitsubishi Pajero TDI
3) a) Ferrari 410 Superamerica
b) ~1930s long-wheelbased Bentley 8-liter from a good chassis-builder
Acura TL (2005) Just bought last week is now my daily commuter (35min). I think the stock sound is well above average. It's the Elliot Shiner 5.1 surround w/ DVD-A. Not sure how to get my lossless digital music into it though and not sure what to do with the DVD-A (burn my own?)
Dream car is a top of the line 2009 BMW 5 series but no way I could afford. the Acura is a great "bang for the buck"
2007 BMW 328 sedan for a little over a year now. I still find owning it exciting. My first "nice" car, it cost more than three times my first three cars combined. As much as I like the beemer, its not a Boxster. I purchased the used sedan over the coupe just save money for the Porsche. Someday soon.
I drive the cheapest new car on the market in my country. Don't have much money so would rather spend it on audio.

Congrats on the 328.

The Boxter is nice, particularly the Cayman S, BUT you need to try the M3. It's an incredible performance car with a ton of civilization. Since you're into BMW now, give the M3 a try before jumping to the P.

Dave
Thank you, and definitely congrats to you as well.

Maybe I will test drive M3. I am sure its fantastic. I am, however, a Porsche fan-boy, having dreamt of owning one since I was a little kid. Plus, my Boxster test drive was a high high with eyes dilated - an ultimate go-kart experience in contrast to the BMW civility. I will test the Cayman, but it is hard for me to imagine the performance gain giving me a bigger smile than top-down joyriding. Have fun, Dave and safe motoring.
Cars? What are those? LOL. I drive Trucks. (actually, that's changed) Have a '02 Ford F250 Diesel for work and had (past tense) a '00 Ford F150 for regular driving. However, I totaled the 150 - now I use a Ford Escape for getting around.
1) 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 Mega Cab (daily) & 2008 SRT8 Dodge Hemi Challenger 500(weekends). 2) Sunbeam Tiger 3) Koenigsegg CCX.
A '96 GMC Sierra that leaks water right above the driver from the front window (recently silicone sealed), various custom oxidized vent holes (road salts) in places along the bottom of the cab (along with along the top of the front windshield), 215k miles, starts a little rough, doesn't accelerate well at all, but gets me from point A to point B the vast majority of the time. Has good rubber.
1. 2002 Honda Accord
2. with the way the economy is going my Klein Mtn bike
3. Porsche 911 GT2
recently found out my beloved 160k mi 99 accord was going to need $3k of work to keep her going. my friends are still amazed I kept that beast for 10 years. so I bought an 07 a4 2.0t q 6sp. but somehow it felt weird having a car > my system, so I bought a new turntable and digi front end to even things out. ahh, back at equilibrium.
1. 2008 Ford Mustang GT convertible
2. Either number 1 above or a 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 convertible
3. I have a list...:)
Porsche 911 Turbo (anthracite/black)
Ferrari 612 Scaglietti (red/tan)
Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 (yellow/black)
Shelby CSX 4000 (blue w/white stripes)
Mercedes CLS 63 AMG (silver)
I have a 1988 1 Ton duelly Toyota with a service body. I've had it for 20 years and drive it back and forth to work. But my weekend ride is a 2005 Black on Black BMW M3 Coup with a Competition package. I upgraded the suspension to a Dinan JRZ Stage 3,replaced the stock exhaust with a Magnaflow kit back to the cats. Sounds great....it always comes back to the sound!
OK, my Caddie got wrecked a few months back so I bought a different daily driver. So besides the modded out Mustang I am driving an '09 Ford Edge to and from work. I wanted to buy another domestic car so I went with this Dad-mobile.

Comfy, good gas mileage, and Ford/Microsoft Sync system actually works and is very cool.

Not exciting or sexy, but I really like it.
