Can LM224 be used to process an AC signal?

To have an LM324 (the more well-known variant of this chip) handle an AC signal its necessary to have either two power rails (positive and negative) or a mid-rail generator circuit.

Yes it can be. Use the highest supply voltage that you can for best performance. What output level are you wanting to obtain?

DIY audio is best, but an op amp fed by a single voltage rail has to be AC coupled.  That is, you put a cap before and afterwards.

Hobbyists usually use dual op amps in 8 pin DIP configurations though.  Easy to swap out!
