Brand new Vandersteen Model 2's

I can't wait to hear them. I've been hearing about them for a while now and have been told that they are THAT good compared to the model they supersede.  The price only went up $100 which is typical Vandersteen.  I'm still amazed that they can offer this much value in this speaker.  I tried to find the thread on this, but wasn't able to.  I'm not the best at searching for things, but hope this thread suffices.

My college friend is a long time pilot with Alaskan Air.  She lives on Brainbridge Island.
Never simultaneously, but it feels like that some days... I used to use Alaska Airlines like a commuter bus - not so much now.
Right now I am in Seattle trying to wring better performance out of a TT, next week probably California...
Trish, I and the Pup did Charleston to San Diego in 2013 in 4 days in the GL-550 , there may have been some speeding.... Mid to West Texas you Can have
Well Any road trip you survive is a good one !!!! I think the new record NYC to LA is 25 hours in a rental Mustang....

The Driver is a great book documentary run in a highly prepared BMW. Pre COVID.

phone ahead so you get the destination right - angle right for Seattle or Left for Carlsbad

your mileage may vary
LMAO...You crack me up Johnny.  Great stuff.  Can't wait to hear your thoughts. I've heard one other's and he LOVES them.  I bet the Mimas would work with them nicely too.
We will have the New Vandersteen 2Sig 3s in a week or so, need some run in time, and tilt back. My older 2 Sig 2s were shaking in their boots yesterday. Hey, some speakers have feelings too.
Cheers, JohnnyR
@ctsooner ,
I think it would be a fun comparison if Johnny could set up a comparison of the new 2's vs. the old model.
Bob
Wow. This is the new travel thread lol. Wife is from WI and two of three kids and family still there. Good VAndy dealer or two in state if I recall.
Has anyone been able to audition the new speaker yet?
I live about 360 miles from Jim's Carlsbad, CA. Condo and have listened to his Treo CT. system. Fabulous!
I did a partial cross country trip from Wisconsin to my new home in Arizona. All in a 28 foot Penske Van fully loaded with everything I own. Does that trip count??? lol
lol... go for it Bob, lol.  Would be a fun trip I'm sure. I've done coast to coast in my 20's and loved it.
@ctsooner , @tomic601 ,
It would be fun to meet up, but I would really like to see/hear Jim's systems. Unfortunately, I hate airplanes, though with the current pandemic, they should be running less than full. Even so, recycled air usually makes me sick.
Hmm, perhaps a road trip? I haven't done one in decades, and I'd love to see the country. Plus, my Audi TTS is a pretty nice ride.
Bob
Gotta be post vaccine but I need to
visit the other coast...

finally got my rebuilt SOTA Sapphire running .. fun...
I bet Bob.  That will be a crushing system you have!  When we can get Jim to come east......:).
I am definitely getting the new Sub 3's as soon as I can sell my 2wq's.

My Treo's fit perfectly in the space I can provide and the Quatro is just too deep to fit. The subs fit nicely in a corner near the speaker and aren't too imposing.
Getting them EQ'd to the room should get me pretty close to those Quatro's.
B
That's what I was going to say.  I've heard the Treo's with the subs and it's about 90% of the Quatro's.  They were the older subs adn not the new ones though.

Agree, Jim. The dealer in question liked the 3A's because he loved the bass extension, dynamics, and spl's. Although having two Vandy 2Wq subs with my Treo Ct's, I feel I can get all of the above and more over the 3A's. He also ran ARC amps on his 3's.
Both running tube ARC preamps, one a REF3, another an SP-15 if memory serves...
I know some guys with 3a sig w muscular power amps ( think Threshold or Musical Reference RM-200 ) that while ceding ground to the Treo in refinement can and do rock n roll with the low base extension on the 3. The massive sound anchors are a must.
fun
It will be a testament to great design if Richard can continue to improve upon the 1,2 and 3's- Especially considering that the basic design was made more than 40 years ago.
My impression of moving from the 3a sigs to the Treo's is definitely an increase in refinement, which I attribute to the cabinet design.
But, if Mr. V. can make the bare bones 2's approach the Treo's, I will tip my hat to him.

Bob
M, all is great man.  I spoke with someone who's gotten his broken in and he says it's a large upgrade.  He's not one for hyperbole, but Richard has never been one to upgrade until the sound is just on another level than the past model.  I can't wait to hear them.
Ct, Bob. All is good. I don't want to make a big thing out this  Maybe I already have. I apologize. I'm just trying to get a feel for how good this new model 2 is. I haven't heard it yet, but I bet it is pretty special. Can't wait to hear a pair!  :-)
Guys, I'm basing my opinion on what I was told. Marketing wise, they could never have their 3300 speaker come close to the Treo.  There are so many differences when you add in how much more they can put into the higher priced speaker.

That said, I bet the new 2's will be crazy good. When he upgrades components in one speaker, he ofter upgrades them in the other ones, but doesn't say anything.  How about this...I'd be in a state of shock if the 2's are nearly as good as the Treos, but they will most probably do some very special things (based on what I was told by someone who has been hearing them for a while now).
Bob. As far as the comparison, I agree with you. This dealer is highly respected by Richard Vandersteen. Yes, I have talked to RV about this dealer. Goes to show ya we all hear differently. lol.
@mr_m ,
I owned the 3a sigs before I bought ctsooner's Treo's (non CT).
I would seriously question the hearing of a dealer who thought the 3's were better than the Treo's- unless he/she was referring to the lower end extension, but on the whole, the Treo's outclass the 3a sigs, even without carbon tweeters.
Once again-
It's just an opinion.
Bob
Ct. Ok, model 2CE Sig. III. A slight slip on my part, but I think you know what I meant. I was only making an observation of the New model 2's SQ capabilities. I agree that the Treo Ct should be the better speaker, but How can you say it's "not close" when you haven't heard the speaker?

I know of a Vandersteen dealer back in the  Midwest, (where I bought my Treo Ct's) and he prefers The Vandy 3A's over the Treo's. You and I  would prefer the Treos, but there are people out there who have different priorities of the type of sound they like. It's just an opinion.
There is no new model 3, just the 2.  It's not close.  The Treo has the carbon tweeter and it makes a large difference.  The Treo was based on the 2, but using a cabinet.  He was able to do a lot of things with the Treo that he didn't on the 2 because of the extra money involved.

Richard upgrades components all the time in his speakers/gear and don't say anything.  Many changes are subtle.  When he has whole sale changes, he will come out with a new designation.  That's what happened here with the 2's.

It makes one wonder just how close the SQ of the new model III is to the Treo.
I have a bespoke DAC built into a custom The Memory Player server/DAC, but if I didn't and I had the coin, the Nyquist would be the DAC I probably get.  It's never got the digital glare.
So true, Ayre, ARC, and Aesthetix are exquisite with Vandersteen and Thiel. Not heard Brinkman.
The RM-9 Mk1 is at least to me a fascinating amplifier- highly musical but also has a three position negative feedback ( gain ) switch , so with careful level matching and upstream components up to task - easy to hear the stereo image effects of Higher feedback.

RIP Roger
The 1958 Reiner and Chicago.... just three Microphones as memory serves... stunning...

IF we survive and any of you get to Seattle or Carlsbad CA, stop by  for some music and fellowship
On classical music... and this is just my $1.50 ... there are probably two issues to get clear on:

how does the rest of your system treat time and phase ???? For a hint the Vandersteen amplifiers use no global feedback. Most of the gear Vandersteen show with follows same philosophy: Ayre, Aesthetix, ARC, Brinkmann.... I have an Audionics CC2 low TIM low feedback amplifier from the 70’s that shines w time and phase correct loudspeakers....

secondly - iF your cup of tea is the closely miked and many many microphones  ( latter DG ) Recordings, then time and phase might not be for you...

listening is the key...

I have New World symphony on today....
@glissando what a great amp collection you have and yes the RM-9 was voiced w Vandersteen as Roger was an early adopter Vandersteen dealer on East Coast.

i can assure you that the RM-9 is a formidable amplifier running Treo CT with either RAM KT88 or EL-34 ( you can see both on my Casa Pacifica System pictures )

I think an option very worth exploring and one the savvy Vandersteen dealers are tumbling to is the VLR- Signature which has the Carbon tweeter and a Sub 3 ...about $1,500 less than Treo w obviously different form factor..
True , but can be a big IF .Many expensive speakers  are voiced for rock , in USA  out of 1,000 people , 35 listen to Classical .
Having owned 4-5 phase alignment speakers it does help but I would not
say a huge diff.
Guys, if a speaker is good, it will sound good on anything.  I asked Ricahrd about this some months ago as I too have always felt this way.  He totally agreed.

The one nice thing is that they are a full range speaker.  That's most important IMHO for classical music.  You will never get fatigued and they don't smear (like the other Vandy's that don't smear).

No one who's posting has ever heard the new ones that we are discussing.  That said, there are a ton of classical music lovers who own a pair of 2's.  Time and phase alignment makes a huge difference.
Anybody play Classical music though these ?

I've heard they do better on rock .How much are  the new ones ?
I bet a Belles Aria Integrated would be a nice combo for the new Model 2. They certainly work with the VLR's.
Now that would be a very price conservative combo.
B
I had talked to Richard Vandersteen about this and he said the cabinets of the model 2 were not inert enough, that is, not controlling vibrations as well as the more expensive models (Treo Ct., Quattro Ct Wood, etc.} which would impede the performance capabilities  of the carbon drivers. Specifically the carbon tweeter. He also said it would make the model 2 excessively expensive, which is not one of the goals of the model 2.
Can you get Carbon speaker Drivers with this new Model 2ce signature III 's ?.

I would buy a pair right now if I could get Carbon speaker Drivers with these new speakers!.
So far only the dealers.  Oh, of course Richard, Brad Richards kids, etc..... lol... I was told that these are on another level than the last version.  He's using top of the line components in that crossover.  The caps and inductors are VERY expensive, even at the number he purchases.  The amps are also upgraded, so even the bass will be much better.  This is probably why he gave it the new designation.

I personally can't wait to hear it.  Put this with an all in one integrated/streamer and what a system you can have at various price levels (depending on whether you want a Rotel all in one or an NAD or Hegel or even better.
Folks just don't realize how great capacitors can make such a difference.
Absolutely. I have first-hand experience with this as I replaced *all* parts in my Thiel CS2.4 SE except the drivers and cabinets. Heck, I even heard a small but meaningful difference among woofer *shunt* caps identical other than voltage rating (and, therefore, film thickness). I have no doubt this is the best model 2 ever and hope to hear one sooner than later.
+1 "take these to another level" @ctsooner . I was gobsmacked by the HUGE difference in SQ when I went from the 2C to the 2Ce Sig II. I could not believe it was the same speaker with updates. The 2C sounded really good, the Sig II sound wonderful. I have no doubt the III will be an amazing improvement. Wish I could afford them...:(
