advice for headphones?
I am currently using a focusrite scarlett solo and an amp sim for playing. The problem is that the headphones i have (sony wh-900xb) are very focused on extra bass and i really dont like the way it sounds. I ordered the beyerdynamic dt770 pro but i returned it because it was quite uncomfortable, my ear was just a tiny bit to big so the padding was touching my ear.
What headphones are well suited for guitar? i also would like to use them for normal use (mostly youtube videos and some gaming).
I live in the netherlands if that matters for availability

I have found that headphones are a very personal matter, both in sound and comfort. I play guitar and have the GRADO SR20 for my phone, and SR1000 for my home stereo. They are light weight and fit me well, (I have normal size ears, so I can't comment on that sizing) and sound great on both my guitar (though a Fender amp) and music listening. However, they are semi-open and some people like closed headphones more. Since you didn't like the Beyer, you may really like the Grado's or another open-ear headphone that is available to you where you live. Hope this helps. |
I am so enthralled by my AKG K340 modified and optimized, that the idea to replace them seems preposterous... I feel so lucky... Small room acoustic is hard job if you go this road, just some panels is not enough... I recommend headphones for average consumers loving good sound.... I did not recomment my K340 to passive consumer beginners, it takes me 6 months to figure out how to drive them and modify them to reach optimal S.Q. with no defects on any count... The bass kill anything i ever listened... Before owning them i underestimated the acoustic necessity to have 25 hertz bass very extended and clear and NO BOOMINESS no contagion between mids and bass ... Most headphones suffer from that in a way or in another, and if not they lack bass or are tuned towards the high frequency... The two cells of the K340 not only gives balance, because extreme of bass register and extreme of high register are driven by specialized cells but the working together at 4KHZ, a critical treshold of "presence" for voices or pianos, made them natural as a real sound in a real room...
Headphone is the simplest and less costly road to high end sound...The problem is all 9 headphones i owned were if not bad very, very artificial, and limited on range frequencies extension.. ... Then i cannot advise people on headphone... Yes they are the solution for me...But which one is really natural, 3-D volume experience, out of the head or speaker like experience...With deep bass and celestial non fatiguing highs ? ...My only one pick is the only one i cannot generally recommend to everyone... Hifiman susvara or Raal ? i am not sure at all that they could compare to mine... I never listen to them... But because i perceive no limitations nor any defects with mine, i will never buy one as upgrade... Will it be possible to listen 30 hertz bass note of Bach organ with my feet and body as if the organ was in my room with the Raal ? The Susvara will give me holographic 3-D volume separation of each instrument with high frequencies exquisite ? I doubt it... 😁 i Pay my headphone 100 bucks, i could not take the risk to buy any other headphone and regret it probably...Anyway why? people who want upgrade feel insatisfaction for some specific limitations they perceive or guess.. I did not.. The K340 was the flagship of AKG in 1978... Some prefered it to the Stax Omega... And those people listened to a new K340 not an old one like mine but their K340 was not modified and optimized as mine is... No other headphone on the market work with hybrid two cells and 5 passive tuned resonators, then his soundfield cannot be compared with anything on the market at any price... I pay it 100 bucks...😉 Then i will never go back to dedicated acoustic room because of higher costs and the long work it takes to control a room acoustically...most people had no idea of how difficult the acoustic job is, they buy panels and forget it... 😊 Viva headphone.... With headphones there are a number of personal preference questions that need to be asked upfront before a firm recommendation can be made: 1. Open or closed back (or, alternatively, listening environment). Open back typically produce a more “audiophile” sound signature, but have the drawback of allowing sound leakage both in and out. If you plan to listen in a quiet environment without others nearby to be bothered, they are likely preferable, but of course that may not be your reality. 2. Budget. No sense our recommending headphones that you can’t stomach the price of. I guess we can assume you are up for a $500ish set since you got the DT1770 but we don’t know how much further up you can go. 3. Musical genres and/or sonic presentation goals. What kinds of music do you enjoy? Do you care about soundstage and imaging of orchestral music, or want instruments in dense metal tracks to sound clean and distinct, or perhaps you want jazz vocals to sound intimate and sweet? We might suggest different headphones for different preferences. As you have likely found out already, comfort is highly subjective but is also a major factor. Unfortunately what one person finds supremely comfortable another person finds unbearable, so free returns or being able to try out headphones for an extended time at a shop or otherwise can be very important in ensuring you don’t wind up with fantastic sounding cans that you never use because they hurt your head. |
V-Moda M-100 Crossfade Masters, closed backs. I can plug the line into either cup so the cord isn't an annoyance. Comfy, reasonably light. I can wear my aids in or out; if out, I can eq them to match up to them. I can wear them and forget until the cord jerks me back to reality....🤦♂️*L* Aids B'tooth if I'm really lazy...and freshly recharged. ;)

Depends on what's your budget..in general, when choosing headphones for guitar playing, you'll want headphones that provide a balanced and accurate representation of the audio, especially for guitar tones. And comfort is also important, especially if you plan to use them for extended periods. |
