Meridian 588 vs Schiit Modius
It will be hard for you to demo Ayre disc players as they're all discontinued. I owned an Ayre C-5xeMP for a while and it sounded great. If you only have CDs, then the CX-7eMP is probably just as good.
Beats By Dre and Graff Diamond $1 million Headphones
The diamonds make the treble too sparkly.
What is the added value of a streamer over a networked dedicated Computer
Timing is usually a non-issue with USB since the advent of asynchronous mode. For a reference, see this document by XMOS, maker of USB audio interfaces used by manufacturers.  The key takeaway is on p.4: Asynchronous mode enables external clock ...
Widow needs help: Sennheiser HD650 headphones
It does - production was moved to Asia somewhat recently, so if it's made in ireland, it tends to fetch a higher price. The country of manufacture should be on the inside of the headband below the headpad.   Some folks claim that Sennheiser chan...
DAC Advice - Benchmark DAC 3
You'll want the Benchmark DAC3 since it outputs +24 dBu from the balanced connection. This means you can use the AHB2 in low gain, which in turn reduces noise and maximizes the performance of the AHB2.   I've used the DAC3 HGC with the AHB2 and ...
Non-Delta Sigma DAC in £800-£1200 range options?
Soekris and Denafrips comes to mind.
Streamer? Aurender's "caching streaming" ? how important is this feature?
Heck, my Raspberry Pi running moOde offers "caching". In the options it's called the audio buffer and the max size is 64 MB. For a stereo 24/192 file, that's about a minute's worth of music. It can also prefetch the next song in the queue and put ...
What is the added value of a streamer over a networked dedicated Computer
@napoleoninrags16 You’re on the right track. As long as the digital data is getting to your DAC intact, there’s no reason to get a ’better’ streamer. It’s already doing the job it needs to do.   Jitter isn’t much of an issue. For example, most...
PC!-e x16, Half Height Sound Card: OBVIOUSLY better?
Happy to hear everything is working well and sounding good!
Warming up digital in my setup
I suggest looking at better speakers. If you really like the LS50, try the LS50 Meta. Much smoother on and off axis frequency response. In the same ballpark price-wise is the Ascend Acoustics Sierra-LX. Also measures quite nicely.   I see that d...
Question for Audacity Pros!
One other thing - I looked over the Nu Audio software page and I see it has options for SPDIF or speakers. Try using the speaker output and setting channels to two if you haven't already. Maybe that will give better results.
Question for Audacity Pros!
I'm not sure how you have Audacity set up, but on my Windows PC I only have three choices for the audio host when recording audio - WASAPI, DirectSound, and MME. I use WASAPI.   Here's a link to the section in the manual about the Device Toolbar...
Did you notice....
I can't hear a difference between the CD data coming from my Oppo UDP-203 and the same track ripped from the disc playing through a streamer connected to the same DAC.   The only problem when comparing with tracks from a music service like Qobuz...
Recommendation for Headphones
Open back headphones generally won't produce the deep bass that you'll be used to with your speakers unless you use EQ. If you end up feeling you're lacking in low end response, take a look at closed backs.   Given how your speakers measure, you...
PC!-e x16, Half Height Sound Card: OBVIOUSLY better?
1. Yes it's a standard printer cord. Make sure the cable is rated for USB 2.0 speed to support playback of sampling rates higher than 96 kHz.   2. I would go for a longer USB cable and shorter RCA. USB 2.0 is limited to 5 m or ~16 feet. I think ...
