Expanding questions about tubes in a preamp If a tube is microphonic simply replace it as dampers won't save it and are basically useless (and look silly)...note how many great tube amp designers don't bother with dampers...Shindo, Dennis Had, VTL, VAC, etc...they didn't get the memo? The m...
I'm here for the enthusiasts, not the snobbery There’s a self important wimp factor among people who feel they have to point out how dangerous motorcycles can be...people who ride them know all about it and really don’t need a "Church Lady" cabal to remind them. In 2019 NYC had 28 bicycle deat...
I'm here for the enthusiasts, not the snobbery I’ve been a motorcycle freak for over 50 years and still ride frequently (if it’s too hot I just drive an interesting car instead), and, of course, have crashed a few times (I wear lots of safety gear now...full face helmet, armored jackets design...
Is there a Solid State amp that can satisfy a SET guy? With efficient speakers (99db) my little Dennis Had Firebottle High Output SEP (pentode) has 12 to 17 watts available depending on the power tubes (will work with a lot of options from EL34s to KT150s)...with the 99db 8ohm speakers it never runs o...
Best 6SN7 TUBES out there I like NOS GEs (compared to many others that live in a crowded tube drawer) and they seem plentiful and relatively inexpensive.
Really need some help finding a full range speaker Never buy speakers without listening to them first, regardless of what others may be saying about them...nobody is using the ears that are attached to your head except you.
Sexy singer(s) and/or song(s) Another vote for Christina Amphlette...the Divinyls were a stompingly great band and her overt "demented schoolgirl" act was killer, with vocal chops and tone that were nothing if not seductive and cool...great musician, actress, and a true original.
Affordable US Made Tube Pre/Power or Integrated Options Although my Freya/Had Firebottle combo works perfectly and sounds fabulous, I've been thinking about the Had Dragon Inspire QMB-25 mono blocks...just thinking...around 4 grand a pair new...hmmm...
Should people with no turntable or reel to reel be considered audiophiles? Lotus Europas were sort of plastic, and maybe drive well...but after seeing a new one burn up years ago (fuel leak I imagine) it looked like it had melted into the street...actually had known the guy who owned it and couldn't say anything...sad...
Should people with no turntable or reel to reel be considered audiophiles? McQueen made the Heuer Monaco watch famous, and few would question how utterly cool that thing is. Over the years I've driven a '58 Speedster, a '74 Carrera, a recent Cayman S, an early 80's 928S, a 914 6 cylinder, and a 944, and they were all ama...
If you listen to anything other than Classic Jazz, don't read this. I have the classic Bill Evans early Scott LaFaro stuff on vinyl (and some on CD) and am a huge LaFaro fan...the vinyl is the re-issued Fantasy stuff (stereo versions) so nothing special there (except great sound), and LaFaro sounds fine on my Klip...
Magico M9 The new 'norm' in speakers I'm making my own at home by grinding a gigantic billet of aluminum with my Dremel...taking a lot longer than I thought it would but saving all that money makes it worth it.
Affordable US Made Tube Pre/Power or Integrated Options New Schiit Freya (original version) into a slightly used Dennis Had Inspire "Firebottle"...total cost (the Had amp was used for maybe 3 months) under 2 grand...sound? Superb.
Does anyone play two pairs of speakers at the same time? The "speaker for each" instrument was the point of the Dead's famous "Wall of Sound" system back in the 70s. So it has been done.
Schiit Freya+(Plus) NOS Sylvania "chrome domes" are great tubes and easy to find. I have a pile in my tube stash and they're a close second to NOS GEs when exposed to my addled brain. |
