Benefits of an external DAC
bigkidz,I do have a Denafrip Ares en route to me for a demo, similar in price to my CIA DAC, so I will give the a listen to it in my system. I can hear clear differences in SQ swapping amps, preamp, tubes, cables and speaker wire, but I will be da...
Benefits of an external DAC
Stfroth,You have a solid take on my dilemma. so thanks for the erudite post.  The Denafrips Ares audition is in the works at the moment and I am keen to audition it.  What totally perplexes me is that in the comparison of my CIA and Gungnir DAC's ...
Benefits of an external DAC
Oddiofyl,I have the CIA VDA 2 with an external power supply and the comparison to the signal straight from the Oppo into my preamp vs. through the DAC provides no perceptible difference in SQ.  Maybe I have connectivity issues.  I will report back...
Benefits of an external DAC
Helomech,I guess my system is about $10K, and is the most revealing ensemble of gear I have ever had... and I have gone through a boatload of electronics and speaker in the past 20 years to arrive at this magical set-up.  I can honestly live very ...
Benefits of an external DAC
Thanks for the insights very much.  Some years ago, I was at the CA Audio show and the particular vendors were using a Bricasti DAC, selling for $5K-$6K.  They also had a Jolida Tube DAC which they were able to switch back and forth with the Brica...
New Yggdrasil - First (and second) Impressions
What a timely thread.  I just posted a question about the benefits of an external DAC with my Oppo 103 because I have heard zero change in the SQ with a DAC in the signal path or not. I demo'd the Gungnir and ran it in for 15 days and heard zero S...
Is it possible to buy a decent tube amplifier in the $2000-3000 range?
Yes, for a bit over $3K, Don Sachs produces an excellent KT88-based amp that is sure to please.  Google "Don Sachs" and check out his Kootenai amplifier.  I recall it has about 60 wpc and will drive most any speakers you have.  Check it out.
Wilsons are the best speakers in the world
The big audio shows are highly recommend for audiophiles to dip their toes into the water of all audio gear, modest and pricey.   I always wonder who the hell are these folks that can afford million dollar audio systems.  They clearly exist, but I...
what speakers to buy
My vote, of course, would be the Spatial Audio M3 Turbo S speakers and pocket the difference from your budgeted funds.  Revel F208's would be in play too and are stunning in appearance.  I'd urge an audio of the SA speakers... open baffle speakers...
Wilsons are the best speakers in the world
Gents,I have been to RMAF and other big audio shows and frankly have never been favorably disposed to the sound of Wilson speakers.  Quite the contrary.  I find them as hard on my eyes as they are to my ears.   If I hit the CA Lotto big time, beyo...
Underspent on speakers relative to overall system?
With all due respect, I think you are over-thinking the whole matter.  You have a great system just enjoy the music.   Regardless of your speakers, a better front end is alway a good thing, as I found out when I got a Pass Labs First Watt F5 amp i...
Crazy to buy a 17 year old CD Player?
Let me be the last in the thread to suggest an upgrade to an Oppo CD player.  I have had the 103D for several years and with a $375 upgrade from Stereo Dave's Audio Upgrade (which was without a doubt the most efficacious tweak I have ever had done...
Bad experience with Red Dragon Audio
UPDATE:  I received an apologetic letter from Ryan Tews and a refund for the return of my S500.  I think he has sorted out some staffing issues that were the cause of the refund confusion in my case.  His gear is excellent and I will continue to s...
Bad experience with Red Dragon Audio
I hate to flame any audio company, but I returned a Red Dragon amp about a month ago and after many emails to them asking about the status of the refund, it still hasn't happened.  I sent back a similar amp to Audio Advisors that I was auditioning...
