How is the OTL sound like?
I've owned 2 OTL amps and I liked the sound of both of them very much. I still have one of them, and expect to keep it for a long time. It is very hard to go back to traditional output transformer amps after hearing a good OTL amp.I agree with mos...
Do you own the last amp you'll ever buy?
That was the idea. But you never know with this hobby.
CD and DVD are history?
No need to worry. Soon they will be telling us that MP3 is just as good as CD and is "perfect sound forever". Then there will be hordes of "audiophile MP3 players" for us all to enjoy. Sort of like 1982 all over again. Come on now, let's get into ...
To couple or decouple? That is the question.
I've done alot of different things with my system(s) over the years. Right now I use coupling, and generally coupling has given me the best results for all my systems. For a scientific paper on what the purpose of coupling is, look at the website h...
TT drive belt comparison
I also found the non-stretch materials to be best in my system. I actually went to using Spectra fishing line, which is totally non-stretch and even used in bulletproof vests. It sounded better than the silk, and fit my pulley which was designed f...
Ekos problem/setup questions
It's the "dreaded Grado wobble". The arm's mass is a little too high for that cartridge. It is a common thing that happens to Grado cartridges when mated with the wrong arm. If a little resonance gets started, then it just gets out of control and ...
Harry Weisfeld Was Right All Along
You must remember that the need for anti-skating changes with the stylus position on the record. It needs more at the area close to the label than at the outside. This is why most anti-skate systems are a compromise at best, anyway. There have bee...
Strange Tonearm Tweak. Long
Jimbo, that just might be the ticket to use the same concept on many different arms. Thanks for sharing the tip with us.
What do audio shops need to do to survive ?
Skyebox, nothing is wrong with 10% over cost, except that many brick and mortar stores cannot keep the doors open on 10% profit over cost. They have all kinds of expenses beyond what they put in their pocket. I doubt that many could exist on that ...
What do audio shops need to do to survive ?
I think that "brick and mortar" audio shops could still survive. But there has to be a new way of thinking. The idea that they can make $5k profit on a set of speakers is gone forever. Maybe the specialist that only sells $50k speakers that cannot...
Re-tipped Cartridges?
Your best bet is to have the cartridge re-tipped or rebuilt(which is more commonly done) by the original manufacturer. This is especially true of the Koestu cartridges. If Koetsu is rebuilt by somebody else, it is no longer a Koetsu. I have heard ...
Table speed
Yes, platter speed can vary in accuracy from one brand to another. Some brands give adjustable speed control. Better turntables have no real issue with speed problems. Very few are absolutely perfect, but speed regulation under one tenth of one pe...
Harry Weisfeld Was Right All Along
Some arms need the anti-skate more than others. In general, longer arms will need less. Linear arms don't need any. It should always be adjusted by ear anyway. If you feel you get best results from none, then fine. If wear is going to be higher du...
Best speakers for low power tube amp
Consider some single driver speakers also.
Quad is going to happen to me?
Large panels do not lend themselves to horn loading. The idea of horns is to load the driver into a fairly small end of a tube, and make the sound come out of a large flared end. If you start with a very large inlet with low pressure, the horn wil...
