About Lugnut -- Patrick Malone
Hi Pat, it's great to hear about the fun and no less of anything that ain't. I love this thread, thanks to all for keeping it up. For small monitors, I liked the Triangle Titus Es a lot when I heard it recently. In a higher price range, I owned a ...
Meadowlark Shearwater vertical orientation.
I too have wondered about the backward slant. If I get the idea properly, it is a feature not a bug. It is meant to help with pulse or step response, by offering a useful time delay so that the tweeter wave arrives at the ear in sync with the mid-...
Meadowlark Shearwater vertical orientation.
Hi Jeff ! Nice new moniker. Thanks for the good words.I like these public invitations. With any luck there'll be a few dozen over at your place swallowing your excellent beer and grooving.Oh... unless you meant at MY place? We're rebuilding after a...
Meadowlark Shearwater vertical orientation.
When I installed my Shearwaters I was advised by a more knowledgeable pal. He made a point of saying that levelling was important, and he suggested I use the Benz Micro round level that came with my cartridge.I actually thought he was a little rou...
More speakers for sale than other componenet. Y?
My guess is that there are more speakers for sale because there are more speakers made. Other audio components have to take a back seat in manufacturing. And after all, most systems have two speakers or more--so they must be the most important thi...
What age did the "audio bug" hit you?
In the sixties, my Dad had a Fisher amp and a Rek-O-Kut TT which was as off-limits as a handsome young priest to a Catholic schoolgirl. One day I touched it... but I was 16 when I got my first amp, a Dyna tube integrated in a kit. That was when my...
smaller speaker suggestions
She sounds great. Speaker swapping is fun. Thanks for letting us in on it. Here are my ideas:1) Totems. The Arro mini-tower sounds very musical to me, is small and can go right next to a wall. Very nice-looking wood veneer, amazing sound for a sma...
Review: Shanling CD-S100 Mk II CD Player
I have received email pointing out that the CD-S100 does not have volume control, either on the remote or on the front panel. This is true. Neither does the Music Hall CD-25. You will need a preamp (passive or active) or an integrated with these p...
Cambrigde Azur 640c???
I liked it with the NAD 320BEE--it was much smoother than the 540--but I would want to hear a Music Hall CD-25 again to be sure which one I preferred. IIRC the CD-25's dynamics were unusually good.
Do i need AC conditioner w/dedicated AC lines?
Sean, there are those that will jump up and down saying that this was my plan all along i.e. to string along the various forums, build up a reputation via visibility factor and then launch a product lineI won't listen to 'em if they do. I reckon th...
First Preamp with Proper Balance
On a related note, my Klyne SK-5A has the most effective, best tracking balance control I've ever used. A millimeter turn to the left or right and the image moves correspondingly--no kidding. And it stays there till I put it back. Many's the time ...
About Lugnut -- Patrick Malone
Pat, I'm sure I'm not the only one who is glad to read all the news you see fit to print. Everything you have shared here has been welcome to me. Even the stuff about cars. There are clearly difficult moments now. I send all my good wishes and pra...
Sub-$1000 preamp recommedations sought
If you can find one, the Klyne SK-5A (like mine) is a lovely-sounding preamp, but its best feature is its excellent phono section. Perhaps not worth the search if your friend is not into analog.
Problem: Power. Solution: ?
I remember reading about mov's in an expert article in Byte magazine years ago. IIRC, there are differences in quality, but they all fail after a certain amount of stress, leaving your equipment uprotected. At that time, anyway, the technology all...
Review: Ensemble Dirondo Transport & Hi-dac Transport
A fine review--thanks and bravo. I am familiar with the older Dichrono digital source units and I recognize the Ensemble sound in your description. I absolutely agree that there cannot be many more natural-sounding units at any price.
