CHALLENGE: Best speakers for playing 1812 Overture by Eric Kunzel with real CANON at 92+dB
I have built many speakers, I have to say, a few could handle this, but without fail,  when I had decent to high sensitivity 15 inch,  these recordings sounded their best.  Also, there has been some talk above about drivers bottoming out on the ca...
6.5 vs 8 vs 10 woofer
Its ridiculous listening to a tiny 1.3 inch dome tweeter trying to gather up a full range orchestra in full power."   You are right it is,  that's why we use another driver below it and a crossover.   tweeters reproduce harmonics mostly and ar...
6.5 vs 8 vs 10 woofer
@mozartfan  I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but you are clueless. You can certainly find An example of each of the above, but making blanket statements is naive.
Leaky capacitors need replacement?
I'm not as in depth about amp building and repairs as others around here, but now that I see this,  I don't see why you couldn't do what you wanted to in the first place and use a decent metalized polypropylene there, say 33uf/400v.  I don't see a...
Burning in newly rebuilt crossover capacitors
Volume matters some, but not like breaking in a driver.  You are increasing voltage through the caps.  It is more important to just get a signal through them, but cranking does speed things up a bit.  I'm sorry that I can't give you anything more ...
6.5 vs 8 vs 10 woofer
@larryi    Oh Larry, you are absolutely 100% correct. I was trying to at least give him guidance on where to look for a basic understanding. He would never design anything from that brief description, but it is a start. Recently, I've been playing...
6.5 vs 8 vs 10 woofer
@mozartfan  I suggest that you study a bit about speaker design.  There is a lot more than spec's, but they do tell a basic story.  Look at the spec's on drivers that you are comparing.  First Mass MMS... The amount of cone & suspension weight...
Refurb GAS Grandson amp or put money towards another amp?
@johnnyotto I know this is more than a month past, but a couple of weeks ago I finished a Grandson complete rebuild.  It was one of the easier amps that I have done and really sounds terrific. I mean really performs at a high level.  Just wanted t...
DIY Speakers
Well, I do agree that Parts Express does not carry many of the better brands, none the less. For $1200 or less with a promo, I find this one of the best kit values out there.... Period. Of course, it stays sold out. They only sell about a dozen at...
Leaky capacitors need replacement?
My gosh, I’m rebuilding 2 amps right now that are 35 and 38 years old, every cap in both amps were in better shape than those. I didn't catch in the thread which amp that you have. I don't think that you'll find most of those caps in what I recomm...
Leaky capacitors need replacement?
On the electrolytic on the boards, I would recommend Panasonic FM, Nichicon KZ or FG or Elna Silmic II.  These caps all perform at a very high level.
Leaky capacitors need replacement?
If you are ordering caps, you might as well order and replace all the electrolytic while you are at it. Also there is never a problem with getting higher voltage or higher temperature caps, in fact it is recommended. Just check the size. You’ll be...
Best Bang for your Buck DAC ?
I wish I would have seen who it was, a post was deleted.  I assume it was this one.  A real turd is correct.
SMSL SU-9 DAC - Is it a budget alternative fit for an audiophile ?
This Dac needs 200 hours of break in and does change its character with time.
sensitivity question
I will attempt to break it down to understandable terms. Through the years, the standard for rating speaker sensitivity has always been how loud a speaker plays with 1 watt of input power with a microphone measuring 1 meter away (on axis)This is a...
