If you could, what live performances would you enjoy re-living?
Wagner's Ring Cycle, 1982, Seattle.
Wanting to get back into the hobby and want to start with the speakers.
Not if your priority is audio, Mr. Chip.

Not true at all about the 6.5' ceiling, Mr. Chip.According to the Salford simulations (U of Salford, School of Acoustics), that 6.5 ft room would be fine, if it were a closed room. In fact, just put record shelves on a long wall and you get ratios...

I bought Magnepan in 1973 - one of the first Tympani 1A's, the first speaker to make Stereophile Class A.Since then, SMG's, Quad ESL 57, Martin Logan, Quad 2805, Quad 2905. In my experience, these speakers can be hard to place for optimal performa...
Speakers which always sound good
Oops - changed a few minor things, like speaker position by an inch or two - lost half an octave. Ah well - there's Sunday.
Speakers which always sound good
Three things:1. room2. books and records behind and in front of speakers3. planar swarmThe two best rooms I have heard both used several pairs of Quad ESL's. The first uses 3 pairs of stacked Quad 57's - it snapped into focus when the last bookshe...
Downside to "revealing" system?
Having owned many esls, I would suggest looking at the crossover network and any other signal processing. You may find that there are very low quality capacitors in the signal path (yes, I do mean in speakers costing many thousands), and changing ...
Trans-Fi Terminator Tonearm: 2019 Update
At the output of the surge tank, before the plastic hose. That's half inch hose, pretty thick stuff. Anyway, don't see why rigid is better - it seems to me that rigid would accurately send all the pulse information directly to the tonearm - when t...
Did any Amp help you understand lyrics better?
@redwoodaudioMost difference? Overall it was the room - purpose made to Salford specs. For voice, turntable, I think. Went to full 3D air bearing with a massive platter. Then tonearm, then phono stage/pre, then amps, then cartridge and alignment o...

What, A.E.? Not into disposable music?
Trans-Fi Terminator Tonearm: 2019 Update
I find that the air pressure changes the sound. Higher is a bit brighter and livelier. I prefer about 25 mm of mercury, or 0.5 psi for most records. Also, a long line of air hose is equivalent to another air tank. My pump is nearly 50’ of 1/2" air ...
Did any Amp help you understand lyrics better?
Yes, I have. I used high quality equipment before making my own, and the way I kept on track DIY-wise was to play indistinct vinyl record tracks, esp dialect. When I heard obscure passages a little less obscurely, I did more of the same, and my sy...
Subwoofers - Front Firing or Down Firing - Which Sounds Best?
@geoffkait Thank you for sharing your experience of 4' concrete cylinders.
I blew up my receiver. Now what?
Good for you, JMK. Some of these jerks need to be bitten back.
Dedicated Vinyl system next upgrade?
@mulveling is a connoisseur of high end cartridges. I suggest that you consider his opinions carefully.I agree with others about the tonearm, and suggest another possibility, the Trans-Fi Terminator air bearing tonearm. IMO it's better than anythi...
