Hardy cartridge
I agree with Bill. Add cuing. And Jerry. Brace your wrist. That's my solution.
Analogue from Digital
Back in the day (1981 or so) the 3-letter nomenclature was introduced for recording, mixing and mastering. It's known as the SPARS code: A is for analogue, D for digital. Thus an ADA record was recorded on analogue tape, mixed digitally, and master...
To clean or not to clean...
@mijostyn I have seen postings from people who claim to have worked in pressing plants. Some of them claim that they used mold release compound. Some claim that it is a residue from the pressing process. Some claim it does not exist. Others claim ...
To clean or not to clean...
Depends on how much you like paying for a cartridge rebuild.Someone did an analysis of record groove gunk: he reported that it’s a third grease, and third fluff, and a third diamond dust (presumably from a stylus). That’s a grinding compound, read...
Bryston ???
@czarivey   Please leave your politics at home. Oh, sorry, I didn't realize it was irony.
Possibly Dumb Question re:Battery as a power supply
Previous experience with improving power has shown a worthwhile improvement in sound. This manifests as smoother with no shrill overtones or sibilance (dare I say 'more musical') as well as quieter. 1. Isolation transformers2. Brute force DC rails...
Possibly Dumb Question re:Battery as a power supply
Phoenix, agree with what you say, but let me add that 19VDC is the voltage at which the part is known to meet spec. With obvious consequences - which, to an engineer such as yourself, pose no issues.Battery noise was measured by someone in Germany...
Possibly Dumb Question re:Battery as a power supply
Thank you, @imhififan  for new information. This shows that a 12V battery should be fine. Still, I would never recommend connecting an expensive component to an unfused battery. And while doing that, why not protect the battery too? I mean, diodes...
Possibly Dumb Question re:Battery as a power supply
I should have mentioned another issue: variability in parts. For example, the MC7812 is specced to regulate +/- 4% or so; which means that if you buy 5 of them, one should be within 1%. That’s 33 RPM to 33.6 RPM. Assuming you need it. Maybe you do...
Speaker and amp pairing
I'm with the last two posters. With modern amps, sensitivity is wholly irrelevant. Some speakers are very revealing, like ESL's or magnetic planars. Only a very clean amp will sound good with those speakers, but fortunately, these are not hard to f...
Possibly Dumb Question re:Battery as a power supply
@lewm , just so. An MC7812 requires 19VDC if I remember correctly. And it's hard to know the characteristics of any internal regulation or the motor, and it may not even be obvious about how motor speed relates to platter speed. Doable, sure. How ...
Possibly Dumb Question re:Battery as a power supply
I salute you, Harold, and your attitude towards what awaits us all. Condolences for Mary.About that battery supply, it’s not hard to engineer something like that, but it does have to be engineered. A DC motor’s speed depends on the supply voltage,...
Step by Step How to Use a Digital Multimeter / Oscilloscope for Azimuth Adjustments
@lewm  is dead right.According to Peter Lederman, matching electronically usually means equalizing channel separation, which is a bad idea which can lead to a poor adjustment. So if you have a high end cartridge, with natural channel separation of...
Mark Levinson No 52 Preamp phono stage custom loading
Don't recall specifics, but they looked impressive, were MILSPEC and cost $50. The inexpensive were noname Taiwan, I think - $.01 back in the day in a big bulk lot. You've started on a most rewarding journey. It led me all the way to ground up DIY....
Turntable versus tonearm versus cartridge: which is MOST important?
Cartridges wear out. Tables and arms don't. Do the arithmetic.
