Stranded vs singal core conductors and skin effect
I am an engineer. I would not worry too much - either stranded or solid core will work fine. Skin effect is a minor detail - it may affect what you hear above 15 KHz by as much as a mere 0.1 decibel in a worst case - that is assuming you have ears...
Class A, AB
Shadorne, I used the example of 75% to make a point- I don't think there are any amps out there that operate with that much 'enrichment' in AB mode. Atmasphere,Most of the Chord line of power amps are 'A' weighted to two thirds power or 67% - not...
Change to Horns or stay Dynamic
Dgad,Based on your comments you might try to audition ATC also - at least before taking the plunge - SCM100asl and upwards (depending on room size). In essence these are one of only very few conventional box speakers that sound as dynamic as the m...
Does anyone out there NOT hear a difference in CD
Nowhere is MrTennis so desperately needed as among a forumload of illogical audiophiles as in MrSpock, Audio Trek, "to boldy go where no audiophile has gone before", episode "I, Mudd", as in "is that muddy sound or is it just me being illogical".
How Much Are Canadian Customs on US Made Imports
Tobias is correct. I believe that you can import speaker drivers or spare parts from other countries (outside NAFTA) without import duty - however all finished products (like a speaker) get the 6% or sometimes higher "import duty" if not "manufact...
mastering vs room and synergy of equipment
A poor choice of room can indeed make for a muddy fatiguing sound - I quite agree. You can also lessen the harshness from bad mastering by depressing the midrange and playing at lower volume levels. Some "hot" overcompressed CD's initially sound g...

of course, that one never really knows for sure *how* neutral one's system is, until an upgrade is made that reveals previous colorations. How do you know that it is not the "upgrade" that is adding coloration? This can just as often be the case ...
best 4.5" midrange drivers under $1K
yeah it's 4in afterall..i cant go bigger cause dont wanna to rework much on enclosure and my listening space is limited if not small The cone may be 4" but have you looked at the specifications for the voice coil. It probably uses a 26 MM diamete...

but have you tried excels? No. But I am old school and a woofer or mid/bass with a voice coil diameter barely bigger than a typical tweeter kind of rules them out for me. You are talking thermal compression big time, IMHO - even at modest levels.
Class A, AB
The definition of Class AB is: Class A to some given power, it might be 5% or 75% (doesn't matter), and then 'B' operation after that Surely an amp that is capable of operation to 75% of power in Class A is much more expensive to build than one t...
best 4.5" midrange drivers under $1K
I totally agree with Gregm. I would be tempted to double up on most 4.5" midranges when working to 150 Hz. I am skeptical that even the accutons could work well that low even if doubled up at all but the most modest of volumes.Pulp Paper is undera...
Class A, AB
I too have Class AB amps that run in class A mode until two-thirds power then run in AB mode. I a not sure of the design principles used - perhaps a sliding bias or the final ouput stage only goes to work at the higher operating range....
Need help What monoblock power amps for bass?
I like fast and tight bass (often connected with SS amps),that is a priority. This will be largely determined by the speaker. I am not familiar with your speaker but it depends how they are designed. Q=0.71 is critically damped and will sound "ti...

@shadorne: Im trying to find to best my excel midrange, i know theyr colder than paper but to me they deliver clear and as-is presentation Shadorne, I would guess you are a fan of the dome midrange? What material? If Audioism is looking for high...
Does anyone out there NOT hear a difference in CD
how do you compare the sound of the recording to what comes out of the speakers ? You use a microphone at a nearfield position or in an anechoic chamber and compare the result to the input reference signal. You can measure all forms of distortion...
