best 4.5" midrange drivers under $1K
Funny, but I prefer paper for its snappy sound. Poly cones sound smoother but sort of dead IMHO. Exactly my thinking. Poly makes a good material for two way woofer/midbass - not my first choice in a midrange though. It is funny how perceptions ar...
Need New Speakers
I'm with Jaybo - get the 8's.
State of the art speakers from yesteryear.
I had a pair of NS-10s. They were not what I would call one of the great speakers of yesteryear. Ahh, but did you ever try putting toilet paper tissue over the tweeter and hanging them from the ceiling with bungee cord? That is the all important ...
Does anyone out there NOT hear a difference in CD
Shadorne, the watch illustration is fallacious; in timekeeping there is one universal unit of measurement. In audio what is the equivalent universally agreed unit of measurement by which one can easily assess the merit of a component? That is jus...
Ribbons caught my att.- should I buy or build?
I am not sure I would start DIY with a Ribbon. They are typically more challenging than conventional drivers. I'd start a DIY project with paper or poly cones first.

If you use accuton that low then I'd use two per speaker.I assumed you wanted metal/ceramic instead of damped designs like paper/poly/fabric.Another option Jordan JX92S - this will be comfortable in the range you require but it will roll off a bit...

This is the only thing I can think of that nearly meets your specs is ACCUTON C²79-6. I would not design around a tweeter.I'd start with midrange first and then find tweeter and woofer to match.

I am not sure - those are pretty extreme specifications - do you understand what you are asking for?
Bookshelf speakers and complex/orchestra
For clarity on large orchestral stuff with aplomb try to look for a bigger speaker - something that has large dynamic range and with a critically damped response (a lean tight bass) The seperation of instruments for example is not as clear as with...
Mid life audio crisis
PMC hits you hard and fast and makes you sit up and listenDynamics will do that. It will also bring out detail as contrast is essential to your hearing ability (due to the well known masking effect). Try Weekend in LA George Benson "On Broadway" ...
Picture discs - Collectors items?
05-30-08: ShadorneI have the Boston first album picture disc......I wouldn't admit that in public.......LOL There are actually a lot of things I won't admit too in public. Like paying Foreplay/Longtime on Rockband with my kids and nephew with my ...

frequency spike at 200hz
I don't think it is microphonics. If the speakers are placed within 8 inches of the wall the bump is gone and so is the rest of the soundstage. I may have misinterpreted this statement and the fact that you system photo seems to show the tubes qu...
The use of equipment as "tone controls"
Wireless200,That was a really great analogy - thanks! The whole idea of the "BBC Dip" or "scooped" midrange sound of most hi-fi speakers is in order to make a pleasant sound that sells in a taste test. The truth is that it really does sell better....
frequency spike at 200hz
That is pretty big hump. Not likely to be your room.Microphonics perhaps?
