Will buy Pre-amp today, help please !! personally, i'm spoiled by remote control for wolume/balance, so the cat wouldn't be on my list. but, if ya really are set on one or the other, then yust buy both, compare 'em both side-by-side at yer leisure, then sell the one that doesn't cut it...
Advice sought on Lowthers. horns have always intrigued me, since i heard the jadis eurythmie's at the '96 s'phile show in nyc, & more recently, the original wersion of the avantgarde duo's. i'm not yet ready to give up on my conwentional set-up, tho, 'til i get to try t...
Best amp/pre for AP Virgos hiflyer, i don't tink yule be able to find yust a toob amp to work w/yer speakers, let alone an amp & pre, at yer budget, if high-power is what's needed. mebbe used, but still no $$$ left for a preamp... i know *i* can't afford it. that's why ...
Best Phono stage under $1200? Audiomat? jc, when i was looking for a fono-stage a year ago, one of these cotangents came up on the used market at a great price; i called gordon rankin, owner/designer of wavelength, to ask him about it, & he said to forget about it w/a low-output mc....
TT/ cartridge recommendations $1000 bigo, years ago (1977?!?), i spent $100 on an ortofon in lieu of getting a gnu 'table to replace the 1229. it *did* make a big difference... a gnu cartridge may tide ewe over until that great deal on a used 'table comes along...gregm, i sure *hope...
Monitor W. Subwoofer VS. Floorstander?? i tried a rel strata - one-note-thump was my experience. my brother-in-law could never get it to integrate well w/his proac 1.5's - ruined the midrange transparency, regardless of which option used on the rel's built-in electronics... he bought it...
How Do You Clean Your CD's? dekay, any decent automotive paint/body parts/supply shop should have it. mebbe even pep-boys, tho i haven't checked.doug s.
How Do You Clean Your CD's? i use automotive-type plastic polisher, but only if i encounter a disc that's wisibly marred or has tracking problems. this stuff will ackshully remove wery fine scratches. best to polish in a direction from edge-to-center of the cd. also works gr...
Tube pre sspwramp vs sspre tubepwr i presently am happy w/a toobed pre & s/s amps. i can't afford a toobed amp that gives no quarter to solid-state amps where solid-state excels. much as i like the air that toobs impart into a soundstage, it takes big bucks to get a toob amp w/...
Monitor W. Subwoofer VS. Floorstander?? re: optimum x-over frequency, i've heard it said that it should be an octave higher then the -3db point of the monitor. my monitor's frequency response is to 40hz, so i should theoretically set the x-over to 80hz. but, w/the flexibility of the mar...
Gain on Odyssey Stratos i'm sorry sibelius, i misunderstood - i thought ewe were looking for another s/s amp. if yure gonna keep the odyssey for a subwoofer, as i said, i recommend vmps subs (two subs, regardless of the brand ewe finally choose), and a marchand xm-9 delu...
phono pre / tube or ss why? i have good results w/a s/s fonostage & a tubed linestage. i don't know all the technical reasons for why this may work, but i suspect it has someting to do w/the fact that the minute electric signals of a fono-stage are inherently easier to c...
Monitor W. Subwoofer VS. Floorstander?? i tink this is a *great* way to go. many ridiculously-priced hi-end speakers are in fact monitors & subs, even if the *monitors* are huge, in their own right. and, a truly full-range speaker in one box can present placement problems of its own...
Gain on Odyssey Stratos sibelius, check out vmps' www regarding their subwoofers. they are passive, which means that ewe need an outboard x-over & amps, but this is an adwantage, imo: yule get much better performance for much less money. the vmps' go way-low, w/tiny ... |
