Acoustic treatment question: do you agree with Dennis Foley that $46k to $65k is required?
My last home had a concrete acoustic ceiling. No asbestos laden soft material. It was heavy and would require a rebuild of the entire ceiling to remove it. But why do that? That kind of ceiling makes for a great sounding room. It was 19 x 29. It w...
Acoustic treatment question: do you agree with Dennis Foley that $46k to $65k is required?
Sound waves really don't care if you're a certified room treatment product. So you can be sneaky with room treatments:No on glass-framed artworkYes on framed canvas paintingsYes on wood carvings and tapestriesYes on balancing the left and right sid...
My really dumb tube mistake(s)
An overlooked advantage of tubes is that they start sounding great within 30/45 minutes of turning on the amp and preamp. My solid state stuff needed to be on for at least a few (3) hours in order to sing. This really is a super duper convenience a...
Vinyl Blinds
I'm sure they're better than the exposed glass of a window or even drywall. Adding curtains over them will help.
Can the top end of a PrimaLuna Evo integrated be tamed w/tube rolling?
Strange to hear Primalunas sound harsh in high end. They actually are known, especially the Evo line, for soft, warm highs.I've had the exact opposite experience. I wanted more upper end detail.
Remarkably better sound possible with just 1 system component change?
Add 3 dedicated 20 amp circuits. One for ampOne for all other analogueOne for digitalUse 8 or 10 gauge solid romex depending in the total run...audiophile grade outlets.
Back to vinyl need phono stage help!
I run a Technics 1200G to Project Phono RS ($1000) to Evo 400.The RS comes with a wall wart or for an additional $700 Project offers a battery powered power supply.I bought an outboard power supply on ebay for $200 and it is much quieter than the ...
Audio Research VT80SE amp vs Prima Luna EVO 400 or 300
I test drove the PL dialogue premium against the Evo 400. There is clear sonic improvement, specifically in the detail and transparency. How much will close the gap to the ARC gear?Only one way to find out. As a brand, ARC is better. But the PL sou...
Better Integrated Amp?
If you can find it for the price, look for an integrated with a transformer for each channel...dual mono. Then it won’t matter so much what speaker you buy.A stepped attenuator is also a good sign.A good/dedicated preamp section is a good sign.A s...
Better Amp for Cornwall IV's...
I would just go with fewer, higher quality watts.Something operating entirely class A in solid state or tubes.
Living with unsolvable hum - Any audio detectives out there?
Ok before you go out and buy anything, do this first!Take a good look behind your equipment. Look at all the power and signal cables. Make sure all of them cross each other at about 90 degrees. No parallel cables should be touching or near each ot...
Substantial Upgrade
@bruinuclafan,I wrote "stellar" meaning 'a really good one' of your own choosing. I did not state a brand. That's up to you to decide. I use a Project RS phono stage with an outboard power supply I got from eBay. It is dual mono and very good. I c...
Amp/Preamp Recommendations
Look at Don Sachs. He now makes an integrated amp as well as a stellar pre and power amp.Best of all, you can request certain specifics to suit your tastes. They are made to order.Although they are made in Canada...but very close to the border.
Does pin hole in woofer affect sound quality?
If you find a pin of the same diameter, you can put another 'mirror image' hole in the other speaker for balance.Seriously, if it's a paper type cone, you can sand some wood, mix the sawdust with a little wood glue to create a filler paste. Then p...
Substantial Upgrade
Sounds like you may need to do a little more research and auditioning. No need to hurry as hearing improvement in stages is really fun.Someone else mentioned this...but I will repeat.Put a VM740ml cartridge on your current TT first. I had this car...
