What's your favorite boutique speaker maker
I like and own Salk. But I think my favorite and the best looking speaker in the world is the Klipsch LaScala.
Turntable Upgrade question..
I recommend, as mentioned before, saving for a bigger step. I also recommend the Technics 1200GR.I have the 1200G with a VM750sh cartridge and love this match up. I also have the Project Phono Box RS. This combination is stellar.
Speakers which always sound good
Honestly, I have never had a difficult time getting speakers to sound good. But the easiest I have ever had it is with my Salk Songtowers. Easy Peazy speaker to place. In fact, they are the first speaker I can put right up against the wall and not...
Try to train them...again, or simply shoot them?
I never lend...I give away.Good friend needs some money? I'll give as much as I'm willing to completely lose.Music is cheap these days...so I don't lend that out at all. I gave my niece records that I have doubles of. Everyone else can get their o...
Your most indispensable "tweak"?
Best of all:2 dedicated audio lines with hospital grade outlets and 10 gauge wire. Was not expecting it to make a big difference...and it wasn't...but it wasn't a small difference either. It was a solid upgrade.I had ordered a new tube amp when th...
Wall mounting on studs
If adding studs horizontally, have each horizontal stud 'rest' on short vertical studs screwed to the existing vertical studs on either side.  Then screw the horizontal stud to these extra 'shelf' studs. This will also give you some extra mass. Ju...
Does the first reflection point actually matter??
I used a lot of formulas but a simple one that gets you 'good enough' to start from is 1/5 from the sides walls and 1/5 from the back wall.  I got best imaging closer to the back wall and a little further from the side walls. Start with best speak...
Preamp suggestions, yes again
I really love my Don Sachs Model 2.  Seems like every year he improves on the design in some small way...very smooth and revealing...and made to order.Want to tailor for your current amp's input sensitivity and one for your next amp? No problem.  ...
Does the first reflection point actually matter??
Hi Erik,So I have also had problems believing in the first reflection point.  Whatever I tried seemed to make no difference at all. I've tried many times in many different ways but mostly using thick fabric panels. For years I've always had a nice ...
Explain what is a clean power amplifier?
Amps that are not clean, just need an intervention.Once clean, they can relapse  But so many amps are in denial.
Stylus shape?
A great profile on a great cartridge on a great head shell matched with the wrong tonearm is not so great.
Who, do you think, designs the best looking tube-based devices?
To Me?In this order:Audio ResearchLuxmanMcIntosh
Are these Speakers the BEST on Planet Earth ?...
No...it needs one more speaker.
phono/preamp analog front end
@atmasphere  Can you explain how the resistor loading makes the cartridge cantilever stiffer?  This absolutely does not make sense to me.
Turntable and amp combination
I too have Salk speakers (Songtowers).  And although my system has outgrown them...they sound better with every upgrade I've made...so they have survived...Get an Audiolab 6000A intgegrated amp ($999). It has good enough analog (with phono) sectio...
