That's interesting about your reactions to the YL/Goodman system.  I can't say I heard those issues with it but perhaps if I had listened longer they might have bothered me too.  My only quibble with it was the bass wasn't quite as rich and weight...

LarryI, that is funny because I went to Vu's this past Friday and heard the same speaker and had the same reactions...exactly.  The speaker in question is the 3-way field coil system with GIP drivers.  I had somewhat mixed feelings about it at CAF...
Devore O/96 vs Volti Rivals
Those speakers sound very different.  You need to hear them for yourself and draw your own conclusions.
Soundstage and explosive dynamics?
In my experience damping the 511 or 811 causes more problems than it solves.

I can sympathize with Kosst over his skepticism about horns.  For many years I felt exactly the same way---all horns I had heard had an annoying "shouting" coloration that I just couldn't get past.  And I still feel that way about many horns inclu...
Capitol Audio Fest
Those of us in the DC area are truly fortunate to have an event like CAF in our own backyard.  It has gotten bigger and better each year to the point where it is now considered by many to be the premier show on the East Coast.  Reading the stories...

When it comes to speaker appearances, the Auditorium 23 gets a gold star for sure.  The cabinet was made of solid walnut with superb joinery and the vertical walnut strips on the front looked really nice.

LarryI, your comment about the Burwell and Sons "Mother of Burl" speakers really surprised me.  Maybe they changed something over the course of the show, but on Friday afternoon when I stopped by their room the sound was just plain awful, I mean e...

Charles, unfortunately the answer is No.  My wife is far more talented musically than I (piano and voice) but she has zero interest in jazz and less than zero interest in gear. She mostly listens to Broadway musical CDs in the car.  This was the f...

Jond, the turntable in the Shindo/Auditorium 23 room was a PTP modified Lenco.  Like you I was impressed with the Auditorium 23 speaker which uses a Line Magnetic replica of the Western Electric 755 running full range.  The midrange was very natur...
Cable recommendation between Dac and Integrated amp
A nice amp like the Pass deserves a quality interconnect.  To stay in your price range or close to it, I would recommend an Audio Note ISIS (poor choice of names) which is a copper Litz cable.  Or if you look around for a used pair, a set of Audio...

Nice photo Thom!  A picture is worth a thousand words.
Help! Tweaking My Lovan Rack for new Big A**ed Transrotor Turntable!
Long term I recommend a dedicated Sound Anchors turntable stand.  I have used one for my Galibier table (over 100 lbs) for a number of years and absolutely love it.  It puts the table at the ideal height without any wobbling whatsoever, and it bri...
MONO cartridge recommendation
Folkfreak, I wasn't referring to your comments.  In fact, looking over the whole thread I'm not sure who I recalled suggesting that mono records played with a stereo pickup will be too noisy.  Maybe it was another thread on mono cartridges or mayb...
MONO cartridge recommendation
I can't answer Lewm's question but I do know my Miyajima Premium BE Mono cartridge sounds great with all my mono LPs.  Unfortunately I don't use it very often because I have to switch tonearms to do so, and I am basically lazy.  I will take slight...
