How to break in a tube preamp?
Breaking in your preamp does not require that your power amp be on. Just do what you said--connect your digital gear to the preamp, put it on infinite repeat, turn your preamp on and use your regular volume setting. The preamp has a loading resist...
Classe CA300 vs. Classe CA2200?
I had a CA300 for many years and had no reliability problems. Same for the DR-10 that I owned for several years before that. Acording to my dealer, after I bought my CA300 in 1995, Classe modified the amp to make it sound more impressive in the sh...
Upgrading coupling capacitors on EAR 834p
The values of the coupling capacitors are not critical. Use anything reasonably close. It is important to make sure they have a max voltage rating of 400v or greater. I have found it is better to use a single capacitor rather than several in paral...
Old tapes reveal how BAD FM became
Gumbygdammit, I would be happy to send you my tapes but unfortunately I threw them all out when I moved a few years ago. I hadn't had a working tape deck for over 30 years. Now with the resurgence of R2R tape, I wish I had kept them.
Which is a better choice? New, or used preamp?
I would recommend a used Emotive Audio Erato, Poeta or even Sira for the best sound and overall value in the price range. They don't come up for sale all that often but if you can wait a month or two you should be able to find one on Audiogon.I al...
TriPlanar Tips
With one exception, I haven't experienced any screws loosening up. The exception is the cueing control which is not a metal-to-metal issue, rather a metal on some kind of plastic. Each time I tighten up the cueing so the arm will stay up when the ...
Do you buy Insurance for Stereo Equipment?
My house was burglarized 20 years ago and my entire stereo system was stolen which put my homeowners insurance to the test. I have to say I was 100% satisified with the way Nationwide handled the claim. All of our personal property items including...
TriPlanar Tips
Harrylime6, your comment about this thread hitting a brickwall may just mean that Triplanar owners are busy listening to their vinyl. That's certainly true in my case. I have been as happy as a clam ever since removing the damping trough.
Old tapes reveal how BAD FM became
By today's standards, I am fortunate to have 2 stations nearby that play very good sounding jazz and classical programming. Both are non-commercial university stations. However, the very best sound I have ever heard from FM was from my college day...
From Thiel CS6 to Wilson Sophia 2 or 3
Stevecham, Life is not that simple. Based on your logic, every speaker designer should use 6db slope crossovers, and any design not using them is inherently inferior. That's just not correct. A speaker can sound very good (or bad) using either fir...
Audio Technica AT-33PTG vs Denon 103R cartridge
I agree with Doak's comment that the 103R lacks finesse. That in a nutshell is my main objection to it. I haven't heard the 33PTG, but I am quite familiar with the 33EV and it is a really good cartridge by any measure. It's also an amazing bargain.
Garrard 301 and Graham Phantom or Vintage Arm
Don't overlook the Schick. It combines the vintage arm advantages with those of a modern arm.
Plans for Thorens TD 124 Plinth
By "plans" do you mean the cutout diagram? I have an old cutout pattern that I could duplicate and mail to you if no one else can direct you to an online source. On the other hand, if you're just looking for overall dimensions, you can probably ge...
VPI HW-19 MkII Vs. MkIII, how are they different?
There is a lot of misinformation in the above posts. Just do some searching of archived posts here and on Audio Asylum to get a more accurate background. VPI hasn't helped things by changing their platters from time to time without changing model ...
Thread source for Loricraft RCM's;also seeking f/b
Can you please explain what difficulties you had with the Loricraft and what you did to correct them. I have a PRC-3 that seems to work fine, but I am open to trying something to improve its cleaning ability. Thanks.
