Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
I don't have any trouble seeing how important the woofer inductor (low-pass) is sonically. What surprised me was that the high-pass inductor is also very important. I tried a number of different chokes on my woofer before settling on the North Cre...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
I followed Volleyguy's lead regarding vintage chokes and swapped in some old Altec iron-core chokes from the late '70s or early '80s. They replaced Jantzen 15g. P-Core (ferrous powder) chokes as the shunt element in my high-pass crossover. The val...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
For another perspective, I avoid bypass caps whenever possible for the simple reason that I can always hear them. They add a discontinuity very similar to adding a super-tweeter to a full-range speaker system. There is a heightening of treble exte...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
Volleyguy1, That's interesting about the vintage inductor. While I am waiting for my 7.5uf CAST caps to break in, I plan on trying some old Altec iron core chokes in place of the Jensen choke in my high-pass crossover.I notice that no one in this ...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
My pair of 7.5uf CAST caps arrived today right on schedule. I will be trying them out this weekend as the main high-pass crossover cap in my high-efficiency speakers. It will replace a blend of 6.8uf Mundorf Supreme and 1.0uf Duelund CAST. That bl...

Speaker Cables With SET Amps
Truly there is no one correct answer. In my case, my preferred speaker cable is the same with my 1-watt SET as with my 50 watt Push-Pull amps. So far my ancient Wireworld Eclipse has bested all others I've tried including Auditorium 23. And it is ...
EL34 quad for LM Audio 211
I love the sound of my Genalex reissue KT77s. Full-bodied and warm, very good detail and dynamics. Plus long life and readily available.
Need Recommended AMP for Spendor S100
I have SP100's which are pretty much the same as your S100's, and I have found the Spendors to be very easy to drive. I have used them with amps ranging from SET tube amps with 8 watts or less to, at the other extreme, a Classe CA300 with 300 watt...
Who remembers the FULTON cables?
One important fact not mentioned above is that Fulton's cables all came in precise lengths which were multiples of 57" (plus a small fraction). This was true of both interconnects and speaker cables. The speaker cables worked out to roughly 14' an...
What amp stands for Cary monoblocks?
When I owned Cary 40M monoblocks, putting them on a Sound Anchors stand was a major improvement. Bass was firmer and more powerful, mids and treble were cleaner and more detailed, and the transformers no longer buzzed.
Fremer's review of the Anna cartridge
The estimated lifetime of 1000-1200 hours has held true in my experience. Most recently I had my Benz LP retipped by SS after it developed some mistracking. I calculated that it was in the 1200 hour range. SS reported that the stylus had significa...
tonearm + cartridge for custom lenco 75
Thomas Schick 12" should work well. See Lenco forum.
LPs for a high resolution check?
One of my favorites is a 1962 George Shearing live album on Capitol---San Francisco Scene. As my system resolution has improved over the years, I am able to hear more of the background sounds. More important, however, is Shearing's introduction of...
Tube Amplifier for Thiel
Using a tube preamp with ss power amps does give you some sense of "tube sound" but the amps are even more important in that respect. Most of the time I had the Classe amp, I used an ARC LS-2. Probably not the best match but that's what it was.
