SE 845 Triode versus KT88 Triode-Connected?
Any tube amp's sound depends on a plethora of factors like transformer quality, capacitor construction(polypropylene/polystyrene/Teflon/tin, aluminum or silver foil/ paper in oil/etc), resistors used, power supply topography and quality, point to ...

Welcome back to analog and enjoy your vinyl collection! =8^)
Jadis with Telefunken 12AX7/ECC83 tubes
Mr M- Since you've brought up one of my favs(the Sylvania 6SN7W); I have to mention the three(really two) iterations of that tube, the shorter one of which I couldn't get out of my amps fast enough(no impact or depth, thin and strident). The tall ...

The 20.1 X-over's Hi-Pass section has 120.3uF of capacitance after the jumpers and before the signal is further split into MF/HF. If he's not removing the LF via an active x-over b4 the main amp, he's basically "passively bi-amping". Not the clean...

The 20.1 crossover is jumpered, and as long as you are removing the LF signal from the input, via an active x-over(with jumpers removed); you shouldn't have any issues. I'm, using a modded TacT 2.2X to actively bi-amp my Maggies, with tubes above ...
New Production EL34 / 6CA7
Another vote for the =C=(SED St Petersberg plant) that Upscale Audio carrys (http://www.upscaleaudio.com/SED-Winged-C-EL-34_p_63.html). They sounded so nice in my old ST-70(tastefully modded), that when I could no longer find/afford NOS, matched o...
How do you remove a tube Key?
Find a long sheetmetal or wood screw, large enough to grip the inside of the locator's hole, partially screw it in(just enough to bite) and use it to pull the piece out.

You know Sky- I may have tossed too many curves by mentioning the Rega and VPI upgrades. I'm a tweek/upgrade freak, so that kind of stuff holds a lot of appeal for me. If you just compare the two Pro-ject tables; you'll probably find the Xpression...
EL34s -- your picks for best?
I've never tried Mundorfs. Lots of DynamiCaps, auriCAP and InfiniCAPs, always observing the outer foil to the lower impedence rule. I'm tempted to try the aura Ts as coupling caps in my Cary monoblocks. I've got a lot of silver cabling, anything b...

Pro-ject doesn't sell upgrades for their tables(that I'm aware of), outside of a record clamp. Rega and VPI(for instance) sell arm/counterweight & wiring, motor & power supply, suspension, platter, record clamp and weight upgrades. VPI off...

All that's why I replaced my modded Dahlquist DQ-LP1, with a modded TacT RCS 2.2X, after 23 years. It was Linkwitz's writings, in the early eighties, that got me started bi-amping at home. I'd been doing it for years before that, in live venues, b...

Does your dealer carry this one? (http://www.sumikoaudio.net/project/products/xpression3.htm) You might also consider the Rega(P2 & P3) table/arm combos, that have motor/arm upgrades available for future performance enhancement.

You're correct on both those counts. I was stating what would be MY concerns in such a situation, and (again)addressing the blanket statements. It would be nice to hear from the OP, regarding the complexity or simplicity of his X-over, so his ques...

If it were me(now that I know the price range): I'd buy a new unit(12% isn't much of a discount for used/demo gear). Still- I've never bought a cartridge(in the past 30+ years) without first inspecting the stylus, via a microscope. I've seen a num...

What amount of power would be dissipated would not concern me. You brought that up. The signal degradation, resulting from by those devices dissipating energy, and the differences in a circuit's impedances brought about by removing a reactive devi...
