What do you see as the downside of tubes?
No need to apologize Mr E- There are also companies that manufacture outboard effects pedals, and guitar amps with options, that attempt to digitally simulate the sound of tubed gear. The vast majority of us still opt for tubed amps though. Nothin...

I Just Don't Hear It - I wish I did
I have to agree with everything 'N' said about varying aural acuity, and training with regard to "hearing differences". Then there's the other crap he's spouting. It takes MUCH more faith to accept evolution, as there is absolutely no scientific p...
HELP: how to eliminate speaker HUM?
The breaker for the outlet that the sub is plugged into may be on the other phase/rail in your main circuit breaker box, or the outlet could be wired out of code. Either of those could cause the hum also. If floating the ground doesn't work, check...

I haven't found a "downside" to tubes. My love for the sound of the real thing, and the frequency at which I get to hear it, demands that I get as close to it as possible at home. Ditto the cost of the best NOS tubes. My view of their cost is dire...

Can I use my passive preamp with tube amps?
Perhaps he wants his music to sound real, rather than to sound like audio. He did say that he prefers the sound with a passive. Stan's comment is right on the money. The goal used to be called, "straight wire, with gain."
Jadis with Telefunken 12AX7/ECC83 tubes
The Teles and Siemens are known for their transparency, and faithfulness to the original signal. If you desire to retain the clarity in the top end/spacious sound stage, etc., but want to add some warmth in the mids: Try some of the NOS Amperex/Bu...
Can I use my passive preamp with tube amps?
If you're asking why he'd want to go to tube monoblocks: If you really need an explanation, you wouldn't understand.
Can I use my passive preamp with tube amps?
Passive attenuators can be very transparent/faithful to your signal, regardless of amp topography. In addition to the above: Listening satisfaction will depend on the output voltage of the source/sensitivity of your amp. If the source(CDP, DAC, ph...
