BTW- Note the metal strip construction(top supports) of the Tung Sols. I've not tried the round mouse-eared or round mica types, so- can't vouch for them. Also- the short bottled Sylvania 6SN7W was terrible(IMO). Way back when; I tried the top 12 ...

If you value sound stage depth & width(excellent ambiance recovery), neutral reproduction(no phony warmth/tubey editorializing) and fast/accurate bass; either the 1940's round plate Tung Sol 6SN7GT(JAN CTL) or Sylvania 6SN7W(JAN CHS, TALL BOTT...

Cary may have had the transports redesigned to their specs. These seem to be the basis of their system: (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Full-DSL-710A-Transport-AYRE-HARMAN-MERIDIAN-PRIMARE-/251988456520?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3aabaeb448) (htt...

Gotta ask: have you tried cleaning the lens?
"The Audio Critic" B.S. or what?
IMHO; these two lines from his GOODBYE belong together: "after several years of very little productivity, I have decided to stop altogether." and "it has been a great 38 years!" Again, IMHO: "Geez, he missed the whole thing," is an understatement.
"The Audio Critic" B.S. or what?
Almost four decades of, "very little productivity...."

Count on having to replace all the aluminum electrolytic caps in it(especially if you intend to listen through the phono section), for decent sound reproduction.
Passive attenuator impedance question
@Dave- "then I say a analogue volume controls have to many resistors or resistance in the circuit at low volume to attenuate the volume and compromises the sound equally...." The stepped attenuator I noted, as most others, only has two very high q...

Mr G- Something that may be of interest to you: (http://www.partsconnexion.com/controls_attenuator_khozmo_series.html)
Computer grade parts?
There are a number of brands of capacitors that are manufactured with audio in mind, specifically. The differences in presentation, when used in audio circuitry, are NOT subtle! The, "exploding caps" plague was attributed to the Chinese/Taiwanese ...

Most enjoyable speaker you heard under $800??
BTW: Either MMg's or MG12's can be found(MMg- new, MG12- used) within the OP's budget(if no one has mentioned that yet).
Most enjoyable speaker you heard under $800??
"I've had 4prs of Maggies, to me 30" is minimum in most rooms." As a general rule, I agree. I have found that placing some of these on the wall behind the Maggies, allows a closer proximity: (http://www.ebay.com/itm/CityBlox-Acoustic-Foam-24-sq-ft...
What is the best sounding amp for Maggies 3.7?
Mr M- Were any of the Stratos monos upgraded versions? In what areas of presentation did you feel the Sanders & Pass excelled, compared to the Stratos? Just curious, as to your experiences.
