Record Cleaning Machines
RCM's all suck (the dirt out of the grooves)- so there isn't much difference. The 16.5 is good. I got the cheapest effective one Record Doctor II (effectively the Nitty Gritty) after trying out more expensive ones. It's not hifi gear, so no sense ...
An observation about "Modern" classical music.
lol eldartford - how can I argue with that. The more he lost his hearing the more atonal his music became. Go figure. I have to say that I just finished listening to Arvo Part - Fratres for violin and piano and it is a very moving peice of music -...
Von Schweikert VR4JR & Tube Amp???
Ajahu, VR4jr has the best bass at it's price point of any speaker. Unfortunately, for you it recieved outstanding reviews, but for the rest of us living in the land of reality, we were thrilled to hear it. Go back to your sad bass lacking system a...
Upgrade LP12 or buy new VPI?
I like my VPI. Not nuclear proof, but neither am I. I guess we will die together ;) - VPI is a good value, lp12 is long lasting and good. Tough call. Good Luck! They are all better than digital, so you can't go wrong.
An observation about "Modern" classical music.
"Atonal" has been used by Bach and all the rest. It's not a new discovery. In fact, jazz music can't live without it.Check out some of Beethoven's late Quartets. They get very atonal to the point where he almost goes past any sense of tonality. I ...
Tube cage on or off during use
I can't see how it would make a difference. I'd leave it off if you don't have kids or animals that might touch it.
Room setup...diagonal or standard and how to treat
Canucks, First I think you are being very smart by looking into acoustic treatment. I would recommend a diagonal setup because you almost have square dimensions. This will give you the best results (I know from experience). However, it is a trial ...
Von Schweikert VR4SR Loudspeaker
I completely agree with tickbite. I have the VR4jr and when I can afford the DB99's, I will get them. They are amazing with a tube amp.Rob
Best 5 engineered rock albums?
ghost rider. I lost my Ultrazone CD and found it yesterday. Man is it well done. All Steve's other recording are mostly horrible, so I didn't even try this one in my hifi system. You are right - very good recording. Rob
Another sign SACD is dying
I think most SACD audiophiles have redbook too and quite a few of them have TT's as well, so I can't imagine why they would be snobs about what they listen to.
Another sign SACD is dying
The creator of this post probably was hoping to banwagon a bunch of people into thinking SACD was dead, so he can avoid upgrading his redbook player. It's funny how it turned into a very hopeful outlook for SACD. And this is based on fact not just...
Can a simple DIY volume knob replace a pre-amp?
So why do most of us have preamps? Are volume nobs better?
Von Schweikert VR4SR Loudspeaker
I would second the DB99. I think it is one of the better speakers out there, period - and very efficient for tubes or lower powered solid state, but tubes are a dream with them. At least listen before choosing something else if you can.
vpi scout/jmw9 arm/ortofon mc3 turbo help.
According to the review in Stereophile on the VPI - the reviewer and VPI maker suggested adding a little more tracking force than normal. This shoul help, but the VPI isn't the best at tracking difficult records anyway. It's not bad. It tracks on ...
Shouldn't amp reviews employ multiple speakers?
Well they'd have to try the amp with several speakers, different room sizes, different preamps, different interconnects, different recordings, different racks they sit on, etc. At some point you just have to take reviews as guidance. That's why yo...
