Is it OK to use an 8 Ohm tubed amp to power 16 Ohm speakers?
It is always better to have a higher load resistance - less current is drawn from tube circuits. Compared to transistor amps, tube amps are challenged by low impedances and have difficultly in providing current.
E-BAY and SHIPPING ARE GETTING OUT OF CONTROL
I have shipped to buyers and have received from sellers. USPS, UPS and FedEx. They are ALL rather expensive and NO bargain for sure! It's a BIG country we live in! Right now I am trying to find a shipper for a pair of JBL 65's that I bought and pa...
Benefits of an external DAC
I bought my first CD player in 1992 because I thought that previous iterations were inadequate compared to good LP playback. I still remain unconvinced of Digital's vaunted superiority over Analog - even though I have listened to many CD's! But I ...
Benefits of an external DAC
Back in the Stone Age Peter Aczel (The Audio Critic) did a comparison test between a Sony Discman and Mike Moffat's Theta DAC. Pre and power amp were Boulder driving Quad 63's. He reported hearing no discernable difference! He postulated that as l...
Linn Sondek question
I own a Linn Sondek and two Ariston's (RD11 and RD11S). I like to have their suspensions set rather tight, with minimal bounce. I feel this tightens up the bass and produces a more focused presentation from the mids up.
Thorend TD-125 Tonearm/Cartridge recommendations?
I have a TD125 with a Rega 300 arm. Still in storage. I am planning on using one of my Denon MC's (103, 301,304) on it. Have always liked the Denon mc sound - and affordable prices!
Why do turntables sound different?
Look at Michael Fremer's set-up in that small room with the Continuum TT and big Wilson speakers! I bet he's not too worried about vibrational interference, since the Continuum is a hefty beast indeed!
Rate my system and chose the next upgrade
The Yamaha at $3000 is fine! To better it you would need to spend considerably more on a separate pre/power amp! Again I say the biggest improvement will be changing the speakers - not the electronics or signal source!
Rate my system and chose the next upgrade
Sell all the Martin Logan gear. Sell the Teac (the Yamaha SACD player sounds better by itself - no need for a separate DAC!). Speakers ARE the weak link here. I recommend from my own experience buying a pair of Ohm Walsh's (the box speaker guys wi...
Why do turntables sound different?
It's ALL about the VIBRATIONS! Every part of every TT vibrates! Some more or less than others! And the stylus "reads" these along with the vibrations in the LP grooves. So controlling and eliminating the mechanical vibrations from the TT is a majo...
Physics of downward firing woofers
A successful design with downward-firing woofers were the Snell Type A's. Excellent bass extension and impact! No need for a subwoofer! I own the Type AIII's and can attest to this - some of the best dynamic bass available! And the against-the-wal...
Meridian 808.2 any goo still?
Yes, buy the second-hand Meridian and enjoy its excellent sound! Certainly competitive with today's pricey gear!
Via Jazz FM 91 - The Devaluation of Music
Most popular music today is just CA-CA! The future outlook for musical advancement looks rather bleak! I am lucky to have a large collection of LP's and CD's of the great stuff recorded in the past: classical, jazz, blues, rock!
Which Snell Type A do I have? A-I or A-Original?
Before the first pair of Type A's arrived at Audiocom in 1977, Del (co-owner) told me "We're getting a new pair of speakers in soon! They're called Snell's and they are the BEST speakers I have ever heard! And they're $1390 a pair!" That was a lot...
Which Snell Type A do I have? A-I or A-Original?
Here's an interesting story about the Type A's: Back about 1979 Bill Conrad and Lew Johnson visited Audiocom in Old Greenwich, CT. They were trying to get Bill and Del (the owners) to carry their tube products. The main demo speakers were the Type...
