4 ohm speaker to 8 ohm reciver Nothing bad will happen! All present day receivers are well-designed and capable of handling 4 ohm speakers.
EAR 834p-- which are stock tube replacements? Apparently EAR does not select those JJ 12AX7's! So just buy some new ones from your favorite supplier and you should be "good to go". JJ tubes have a good reputation for consistency!
Stacked Quad Questions Change that to CONCAVE! My mistake!
Stacked Quad Questions I have had Quads since 1982! Presently have two pairs - only one pair in use right now. My amplifiers of choice are: Bedini 25/25, Futterman H3AA's and Futterman Harvard Music. I recommend selling the VTL pair and buying bdp24's Bedini so you can ...
Why is the snake oil topic closed? In capitalist society we are free to spend our money as we wish. However, advertising leads us down an either/or, this/that path where confusion is encouraged! Coke or Pepsi, anyone? Wire is in the same category. Who do you believe? Who do you tru...
Age old discussion I know but MM or MC? Benefits? I have yet to hear a mm type sound as good as a LOMC cartridge - and this after 40+ years!
Age old discussion I know but MM or MC? Benefits? The mc type of cartridge is inherently faster and able to trace more accurately the vinyl grooves. Lower moving mass, lower inductance and lower noise compared to mm types. Read Mitchell Cotter's explanation in The Audio Critic circa 1977! And he ...
Thoughts on best budget phono pre-amp under $400? PS Audio III still competitive with present day gear! I owned one years ago and stupidly sold it! But I already had a Precision Fidelity C7 tube phono stage! Which I stupidly later sold! Wish I could learn from my mistakes!
Not much discussion around MBL MBL is OVERPRICED German gear made for the STATUS conscious bling crowd. NOT AFFORDABLE by the average hi-fi enthusiast - hence few posts! Best bang-for-the-buck omni speakers have always been the OHM Walsh's (made in Brooklyn, NY)!
Best way to decrease the internal volume of a sealed speaker? Fiberglass insulation!
Stand alone tweeter? Metal dome tweeters are excessively "bright" sounding! Replace yours with a pair of SEAS silk-dome tweeters. These are used in my Snell A's, E's and J's - with excellent results!
New York HiFi Show: Tubes and Turntables Today 99% of the public does not care about better sound quality (Hi Fidelity). And only the 1% can afford the outrageous prices of the so-called "Hi End" gear. When I attended the NYC shows in 1976 - '80 the attendees were predominantly middle-cl...
Let's talk power cords It would be wonderful to live in a world where changing a piece of wire improved sound quality. Alas ...
input impedance load on a cartridge. The "rule of thumb" is 10X the mc cartridge's internal impedance: Denon 103 impedance is 30 ohms, so 30 X 10 = 300 ohms for best (flattest) response.
Should I buy a new cd player or DAC or both or neither? The biggest improvement you could make would be a change of speakers. All the rest of your system is fine. I recommend selling the Totems and buying a pair of Ohm Walsh speakers. Room-filling sound with 3-D imaging - and NO need for subwoofers! I ... |
