Current model HT PJ's -merely software upgrades?
I would tend to see this as a bonus - buy a used one on the cheap and update the software. What's not to like? If the PQ is *stellar* as you say, why sweat the internals?-RW-
Suggestions for New/Used amp under $3500
I currently have an Emo XPA-5 and used to have a Butler TDB-5150 - both are multi-channel amps. The Butler sounded very, very good with a nice, smooth sound and pretty good "grunt". The Emo that replaced it - I needed money, sigh - is a really goo...
How did your sound system evolve?
Man, that Kenwood table sure hung in there for a long time. I remember those, very solid kit indeed!I got started with a Heathkit AR-15 receiver, pretty solid performer. This was mated to a Dual 1229 turntable with Shure V-15 Type III cart. and so...
Subwoofer for Beginner
There was an Audio Asylum member and speaker builder who built a subwoofer using a Home Depot plastic bucket (NO kidding!) and a Parts Express driver. According to all who heard it, it was pretty darn good. The build was easy to do and the cost wa...
W4S STI500 or MF A5.5 for Kef R500?
All of the KEFs I've ever experienced benefited from a high current amplifier. In your case, I would compare that spec. between the two amps and purchase the winner...-RW-
Cost effective Schumann Resonator
What a very kind and reasoned post, John, thank you! I have to think that only something like a whole house Faraday cage would be effective at eliminating environmental EMI/RFI. And not many would want to bear the expense and hassle of implementin...
Bored with my B&W Zepplin Air
Wow! I just found this while perusing the Marantz products here. It's called the "Consolette" and looks like a very cool product - very nice aesthetics, too. has a built-in iPod dock and USB connectivity. All in all, a pretty sweet piece at the $4...
Happy music...
I like the way you think, Mapman! And you offered up some really great ideas. I particularly like Surf music, and my favorite band of that genre are The Mermen. Folks can get a listen to their stuff by going to the Archive.org....-RW-PS: The Sat. ...
Power Cords: A Skeptic Looking to Dabble...
I realize that folks have different skill sets, but I find it hard to imagine that someone could not build a power cable. If you can handle a box cutter, a pair of pliers, and a screwdriver, you can easily build your own and save serious money doi...
Wrong speakers
Of the mfgrs. you listed, I would most like to own a pair of speakers from MBL. Their design and execution are fabulous. And I see that there is a pair of 116s available here for $8,700. I would buy those speakers in a hot second if I had the mone...
Bored with my B&W Zepplin Air
Those Talisman speakers look very, very cool. And I notice they have 5 different models with radically different shapes. If aesthetics are very important to you, these would seem to be the logical choice. And they have powered versions with amps b...
My grandfather needs some suggestions for speakers
Waxwaves wrote: " It helps to have a good reference to start from, and this gentleman wants a good set of loudspeakers first."WW, the Polk speakers are actually pretty good. The point I was trying to make is that no matter how good the speakers, i...
My grandfather needs some suggestions for speakers
Good on ya, JohnnyB! It is soooo nice to find speakers that really, ummm, speak to you! I found the same when I got my Gallo Ref. 3.1s. And I, too, will never again put up with the coloration that comes from box speakers...-RW-
Best Christmas music, CD or album on your list ?
I have always enjoyed Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas Symphony and Christmas In The Aire...-RW-
True Sound Works Apogee Diva Ultimate - Any Good?
IIRC, the Apogees are a *very* difficult speaker to drive properly. My reading indicates that they can drop as low as 1 ohm at certain frequencies, thus they are very taxing for 99% of the amps out there. Also, they present a very reactive load to...
