ARC Tube preamp suggestions
I like the lush, warm tube sound with all the pros and cons. I have a pair of Wilson Cubs with a 12" sub attached.I certainly would not recommend the LS16 if that's the wish. I have not heard the others, so can't comment on them.
Difference b/w RPG Skyline and GIK QRD diffusors
Here's another alternative for you. The Alphasorb panel from www.acousticalsolutions.com. As I recall they are about 470.00 per pair delivered. These panels are not as visually challenged as other diffusors.I can't comment on how they would compar...
Biamping B&W Nautilus 803's
Since the cross-over is a high 350hz your best bet would be identical amplifiers.
8 gauge vs 10 gauge OF speaker cable
08-05-10: Ebm8 gauge is better carries more current.I would agree with that statement, with the word "better" removed. So then, why not go for 6 gauge, 00 gauge, or solid copper buss bars between amp and speaker? That should be nirvana using this ...
VAC Signature MKIIa pre-amp
I might suggest to try a set of Stillpoints under the VAC. I find it offers a significant improvement no matter which amp or set of speakers I am using at the time. They add life, dimension, vibrancy, and bass definition. The interface is a 1.5 in...
8 gauge vs 10 gauge OF speaker cable
Either one is overkill for the length of the run. Are you running 1000 watt amps into an inefficient load and listening at 100db or more? The right tool for the job always works best. You don't use a sledge hammer to drive home a finishing nail.
Quick poll: Most enjoyable audio magazine ?
HiFi+ was the best until Roy Gregory left. So, next up would be Stereophile. I really like Art Dudley and Michael Fremer. TAS is basically dull and uninvolving.
What do you NOT plug into the power conditioner...
I'm out of outlets on the Nordost Thor so the power supplies for the table and the phono preamp lose out. The Thor is fine with power amps although I never tried the W4S amp into the wall.
What isolation feet to use??
I'm in agreement with Tbg on all counts. Stillpoints under my VAC Renaissance preamp are a very positive upgrade. Conversly they don't work as well under the VAC dac which sounds best coupled with brass spikes.
How, or why does an amp stand improve sound???
Materials and construction of the rack/stand will be audible on a high resolution component. I don't agree with Samhar's statement of "The more vibrations you reduce to/from the amps the cleaner the notes will be." There will be a rack/stand that ...
What are the best small not bookshelf speakers?
The Sunfire CRM comes to mind. You can search TAS for a review. I have no personal experience with this product, only being impressed by the review and it is a package that might fit your requirements. http://www.sunfire.com/productdetail.asp?id=24
Glider M or Glider SH Opinions
I have the SH and wish I would have gone with the SM or SL. I don't like it run through the mm stage of my VAC. The loading isn't right and the 40db gain is a hair light. I use the Phonomena pre which is very adjustable, with 44db gain and 1000 oh...
Do I need new stands for my new speakers?
The base plate only needs to support the speaker. It doesn't need to match the dimensions of the speaker. Then you need to decide to couple or decouple.
To all tube lovers.......
I am enjoying the W4S ST500 which is something I didn't expect to be saying. It's not exactly tubes but it's not exactly SS either. Besides it sounding great (no SS glare), it is reasonably priced. No hum, no hiss, no heat, no maintenance, no othe...
Class "D" amp? I do not have a clue. Do you?
My experience mirrors that of Mrkoven. I have the ST500 and it's not quite tubes, but it also does not have the brittle crystaline quality of many transistor amps. I find the amp entertaining to listen to for hours without aural fatigue.
