Do I need a pre-amp?
From what I see you will need at least an external phono stage for this receiver, which you could run into one of the analog inputs. You cannot just run the turntable into the unit, it needs to have the RIAA equalization of a phono stage. No need ...
Transitioning from SS to tube amplification
I think you should also recognize that the Rogue uses different tubes than the PL, KT 120s, that might be a little leaner in the midrange than the PL. I'd listen to it first before buying, I don't think it will have the classic tube sound that you...
Triton One, Audio Physics EP2 or Used Merlin VSM-M
Be aware that the designer of the Merlin speakers recently died, and as far as I know there is no concrete plan yet on how the company is going to proceed, given the suddenness of the passing. Check the archives under Bobby Palcovic's name. As goo...
Meitner/EMM Labs Firmware Upgrade = Sonic Bliss
Maybe the death knell, but you know, the older products still stack up well against the other products out there.
Free $3K preamp to lucky listener who names it
I still like my entry of the "Blues". That way they would have Rhythm and Blues.
Info from those familiar with Audio Research
I owned an ARC SP-11 Mk 2 for many years. It was the first of ARC's hybrid tube/solid state preamps. I would call it more neutral than the SP-10, tending more to the solid state sound than the 10. It used 6DJ8 tubes, and had some ability to tailor...
Sanders 10B Electrostatic
I hope someone with experience can chime in here. I do seem to recall some people (was it you, Albert?) who used Wolcott amplifiers with Sound Lab electrostatic speakers, I wonder if they might be a good match for the Sanders.
McIntosh C2200 vs Shindo Aurieges for Shindo Monti
I'll third the Shindo recommendation. The Mac gear is fine, but if you want music the Shindo combination is magical.
I will ask a dumb question on power conditioners
I have a Silver Circle 5.0, and agree with your findings in my system as well. But how could you pick the damn thing up, it weighs more than anything in my system!
Looking for pre with 2 volume controls.
Jadis JP80 and 200, and JPS2. Very expensive, though. As Al mentioned, you could accomplish the same thing with a balance control (which is becoming less and less common these days, it seems).I'm also curious about the two different mono amps.
6SN7 tube question
Agree on using Andy at VTS. Very knowledgeable, and you get your money's worth from him.
Audio Consignment Shop In The New York Area?
Not sure if they fit the description, but is Toys From the Attic in White Plains still in business? Why don't you think an Audiogon listing wouldn't work?
Liquid Midrange' - strong side of which tube amps?
In addition to VAC, the amps with the most liquid midrange I have heard have been from Jadis, particularly their JA 30 and 80 monoblocs (especially when used with EL 34 tubes) and their Orchestra and DA 60 integrated amps. Jadis gets the midrange ...
Liquid Midrange' - strong side of which tube amps?
VAC does have a current integrated, the 160i. It has a very nice midrange, as do all VAC products.
The best speaker you ever heard?
Cello's Performance mono amps (sometimes called the Red Eyes because of their red light in the front panel) put out 350 watts, I believe. Perhaps Mattmiller heard a system using multiple Performance amps; I seem to recall hearing something like th...
