AV receivers to stay away from??
Your choices are decent ones (avoid cheap Sony, Pioneer,etc...they're disposable). The Yamahas are built well, but do sound thin. My brother still usues my first Onkyo receiver (purchased in 83). HK is good too (more "bass", less air), but I would...
Next ? Is DVD audio as good as CD?
I use my Pioneer DV05 and I enjoy listening to it (the DV37 is it's replacement). I talked to Stan Warren about mods and he said that Pioneers high-end models (DV05, DV37, DV09, etc) use Japanese DAC chips, but the cheaper models (DV525, DV333, DV...
Great Beatles CD
As far as I know, they're all the same. They were digitally mastered in 86 or 87, and that is still the current version. They really need some 24/96 remastering. I'm sure they're going to wait and try to make as much cash as possible.
best all around monitor
From my experience, I recommend the Merlin VSM-SE. They're floor standing, but really nothing more than monitors with good bass response.
47 Labs Gaincard
I demoed one of the 25W units. They're not cheap, but they are impressive with the right speakers. They're still different from SET amps...not necessarily better...it depends on your preference (the old tube vs SS thing). The power supply is compl...
Best CD player for $700.00
I started using my Pioneer DV05 (instead of an old Studer/Revox A727) and am very happy with it. It's musical and enjoyable to listen to (but I haven't tortured myself by comaparing it to more expensive players). I can always upgrade by adding a D...
Buidling a Classical Library - MUST HAVES!
Most standards recorded by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra during the fifties (and early sixties?) are worth picking up,and many are available on budget CDs, expensive gold CDs, heavy vinyl reissues, and the original RCA LPs. I believe this period ...
Best speaker cables
You won't be able to listen to 2' cables before buying, but you could listen to 8' pairs, decide which particular cable you enjoy the most, and then order a 2' pair of that particular brand. I'd put Cardas, JPS, and Coincident on your list.
Where do you buy Hubbell wall socket?
What recommendations do you have for a building built in 1916 with old wiring (20's?40's?50's?) and no ground in any outlets. Is it worth using when of these outlets in place of the standard home outlet? Thanks.
monitor speaker for near-wall placement?
I'd highly recommend listening to Mission in that price range. They have good speakers in the $200 range, and I'm not sure about current models, but they had a model that was around $500 (the 750??, I think). They recommend that most of their mode...
REL Hum 60 cycle I believe
I had the same problem with Luxman amp / Mission sub. I learned to remember to shut the sub off before the amp...other than that they both worked fine.
Best sounding preamp under 2K?
For solid state, I recommend trying to find a used Pass Aleph P. The newer versions have remote. They're built very well and extremely transparent. There are also used Joule LA100s and Audible Illusions (and they would probably be less than $1000 ...
Opinion on Buena Vista social club CD?
oops...Ibrahim Ferrer's disc is the one that Ry Cooder produced, but there are several more besides his.
Opinion on Buena Vista social club CD?
It is a good sounding CD, and I am only aware of one version. There are some "solo" albums from some of the members...at least one produced by Ry Cooder.
CD Player w Volume control-Suggestions?
I'll save Carl some time and tell you to check out Resolution Audio's CD50 (or maybe the new CD55). I think the Birdland DAC may have volume control?? The EVS Millenium DAC2 has it as an option (two added attenuators), but it doesn't seem like Ric...
