Bel Canto SETi40 intgrtd or SET40 monos
I had a SETi40 for a short time...they are very nice amps. If you can make do with three inputs, the SETi40 is recommended over the SET 40 (even by Bel Canto). I had some problems with transformer hum and my voltage, and I didn't think it was a gr...
Interconnect for Pass Aleph 3/Aleph P
I never actually tried them when I owned that combo, but I'd recommend testing the JPS Superconductor+. They have a nice strong bass, and the high end isn't so revealing that you hear a lot of whispiness and sibilance. I still have an Aleph P, and...
The gender-split in audio
I think some of the women on this site have summed it up as a preference for music over gear. It seems that most audiophiles are into the engineering and sonic technicalities as much or more than the music itself. The details are very important to...
Which DAC? Bel Canto? Assemblage? EVS?
The EVS, Perp. Tech, and BelCanto are in a similar price range. I think the Assemblage may be priced higher. I haven't heard any of them yet, but I am on the waiting list for the EVS DAC II (and have been since last July). The EVS should be the be...
Mark levinson audio system in Lexus?
I think Levinson is a Harmon company, isn't it?? I know Toyota stereo's are basically HK / JBL combos (more Harmon Companies), so the Levinson / Lexus tie-in makes sense. How much do they actually charge for them?
Gold disk VS regular disk?
And of course, there's the marketing angle. They were charging quite a bit for a CD.
Gold disk VS regular disk?
I think MFSL explains the gold thing in their product literature. If I remember correctly, they don't say that it sounds better than aluminum...I think they claim that gold is better for surface consistency and longevity.
Norh ACA preamp
Yeah...they're definitely interesting. I was checking out preamp options when I heard about the Don Morrison models. I researched those at AudioAsylum.com and ran across someone comparing them to a nOrh, and saying that they liked the nOrh better....
TV Interference/RF Noise???
Check out jensentransformers.com...they have an Isomax piece that sells for about $50. Radio Shack may have a cheaper option...I'm not sure. I used the Isomax. It took the hum away, but it wreaks havoc with the local broadcast channels (received t...
Norh ACA preamp
From what I've read, they're very nice (some poeple have reviewed them at AudioAsylum.com). I think the copy out is just a fixed output...they included it so you could have an output running to your computer, if you're into that sort of thing. I s...
phono stage or preamp suggestions
Hi Thor,All of the above are failry expensive. There are also many good models available for $1000 or so...some are less (EAR, Benz, Audiomat, etc). You can also find a Lehmann Black Cube for about $600 new and $450 used. Those are a great bargain.
EVS Millennium DAC II
I received an e-mail from Ric last week. He said that he was finally finished and beginning to ship his DACs. He told me that mine should be ready in about three weeks, and he would be contacting me. I think I'm #16 on his list, but I'm not positi...
Who has seen this equipment before?
Don't be fooled by the Denon name...they definitely took the Luxman approach and made some very high-end, not mass marketed gear. There's no doubt in my mind that those pieces are quality. How they sound is subjective, but I'm sure they compare fa...
Phono stage--please help
I'd recommend auditioning the Audiomat Phono 1 (priced just under $1000, I think). It is a French SS unit, but has a lot of tube-like qualities and is very detailed (there is a review on Soundstage, and their distributor is at mutine.com). Some pe...
Any good cheap integrated amps?
Luxman made some really great receivers...so did Yamaha, Pioneer, Kenwood, Onkyo, Sansui, etc...depending on the model. There's a point in the early 80's where build quality started to suffer, but there are still some good receivers made after tha...
