Cold room, Bad for equipment?
One thing worth mentioning in an audio room is choosing a heating method that doesn't make much noise. Something with a blower, to me, is unacceptable. Blowers are fine to room up the room beforehand, but not to maintain it while listening.
any reasons NOT to buy a peachtree nova?
I'm curious, those who have purchased Novas... did they have a notable break in period. I just acquired one and it seems very bass shy out of the box. Midrange, treble and imaging are all good (phase is wired correctly). Just wondering what people...
Cold room, Bad for equipment?
How much energy does it take to maintain it at 50 or 55 degrees with your space heater? I don't consider that temperature to be exteme cold, nor do I think the "swing" up to 68 to be to dramatic, especially from 55. If the room is really well insu...
Separate Crossover for JL f112 Subwoofer?
I don't think it's necessary. I'm use an F113 with a pair of Avalon Indras, and they blend really well together. Not getting any annoying overlap. Very pleased with the result.
Music file format advice
I would use AIFF, as this supports tags and WAV (in itunes) doesn't. One downside of AIFF (and I believe WAV) is that the artwork stored in itunes isn't actually connected to the file, instead itunes maintains the information to connect them. So, ...
Itunes Genres: Are you a splitter or a lumper???
By the way, if you're a splitter, once you've broken up many related categories (like the many ethnic genres I've individually defined), you can combine them again for listening into one mix by using itunes "smart playlist". With this, you can lis...
New DAC recommendation $1K, hopefully tube.
The Havana is a great DAC (I own it), but I don't think it's well known for jitter reduction. I use mine in a second system (under construction), and will go USB with it from a Macbook I3. In my main system, I use a Mac Mini, and I insert an Empir...
Wilson Sophias vs Avalon Indras
I'm not very familiar with the Sophias, but have enjoyed the WP7's for their delicacy with Lamm SET amplification. I currently own the Indras, and I find them to be very musical and balanced, excellent sound staging, reasonably fast. I'm very happ...
Avalon Pricing Policy?
Find a dealer who has a pair of demos they are allowed to sell as discounted. I don't know what restrictions constitute the definition of demos. If out of state, and if you have a local Avalon dealer, you may have to visit the out-state dealer to ...
Gryphon on Avalon Indra
How much grunt does that amp have? I'm running the Indras nicely with an Ayre V5xe and VTL 450's. I do think they benefit from some juice.Best, Peter
Okay, Classe CA 2200 or and Ayre V -5xe amps
I've got the Ayre V5xe with my Avalon Indras, and it is a great combination. They Ayre isn't aggressive at all, nor is it dry or flat or harsh or any of those things often attributed with solid state. It makes a great soundstage and has a very mus...
Amplifier input tech question
Dave makes really good points, and 8v seems like an awful lot of output for a preamp. The parameter you want to compare, when considering amps, is the input sensitivity. Start looking at different models and see how they vary from the Aragon. If t...
REL Studio III vs. JL Audio Fathom 113
I've currently got one Fathom 113 and love it. It was a breeze to set up and integrate. Although the manually says an external Xover is better, I do use the HF trim and cut it off around 40 hz with very good success with my Avalon Indras. I also r...
VTL 5.5 vs. Lamm LL2?
I compared the 2.5 and the LL2D, and found that the LL2 had a huge soundstage, it was significantly better than the 2.5. I haven't heard the 5.5, but one area the 2.5 excelled in was pace (and neutrality too). I imagine the 5.5 has that and more.
Interaction with music server while listening?
Why not a mac mini for server and an iPod touch for remote?
