B&O, overpriced artistic piece of audio?
Sound quality is not the sole criteria for equipment selection! The visual presentation of a product is critical. Bemop, if the looks are that important, then go for it and be happy. You will lose sound quality, but so what. After all, even the mo...
Alesis MasterLink CD-R/Hard Drive record
I stand corrected, the high format disk will play on CD-ROM computer drives. Check out the review in 7/00 Mix, or visit alesis.com for more info.
Alesis MasterLink CD-R/Hard Drive record
I've heard good things about this product, but I'm wary that it works upon a non-standard format. It's my understanding that the higher sampling rate CDs will not work on other players (CD or DVD).
Speaker Placement/new component
No. To truly evaluate any changes in your system, leave everything else unchanged. The differences between components is often very subtle and these changes can easily be overwhelmed by even minute changes in speaker position. After you have thoro...
Beautiful Speakers
Beauty is even more subjective than sound, but I particularly like the looks of Sonus Faber Homage (both models) and any of the Avalon models.
The fallacy of ac treatment
Redkiwi, in my 11/5 post I did not state that power cords do not work; I said they were not a good value FOR ME. My experience is that power cords do make a sonic difference. Within the context of my system I have made a choice to address the prob...
The fallacy of ac treatment
I'm currently using the PS Audio P600 model running from a dedicated power circuit. In the past I've used API and Versalabs products. Each of these products has made a noticeable difference in sound quality. I don't use any specialty power cords, ...
Shelf Material
I'm currently using 1/2 thick glass slabs with either BDR cones or Vibrapods. I'm very satisfied with the combination, however, nothing is perfect and I don't believe any single material works in every situation. Consider this -- the best shelf ma...
Options besides the PS Audio Powerplants
Save for the PS Audio. I replaced my Powerwedge w/ a PS600, the difference was not subtle. Read the product literature. Each unit has its own approach, but I believe the PS Audio has the most far reaching and effective solution. It's not cheap, bu...
Which track do you demo to your friends?
Outlier, so what if they pick a crappy sounding recording? I believe that a well put together high end system will serve the music regardless of the recording quality. Good music will sound great on any system, but it will come across even better ...
Why does it sound less dynamic?
The above post should all be heeded, it is likely that there is an equipment mismatch. However, let me suggest another possibility, maybe your system doesn't "excite" because it is truly lower in distortion. In recording studios there are a number...
Limits of Sub Woofers
Curtaudio, please describe how you determined the Velodyne's low frequency measurement. What test disc, SPL, whatever. I'm curious.
Preamp with deep soundstage suggestions
The original Rowland Coherence II is a full featured (includes phono and tape facilities) preamp that offers the soundstage thing. It is not as detailed as some modern products. It has lush, creamy sound that is very appealing. The can be had on t...
Which track do you demo to your friends?
Whatever is in the CD player usually works, or I ask them what they want to hear. Most of the time I can pull it out of the record collection. I also let them set the volume level. The only thing I insist upon is that they sit in "the chair".
3-D Imaging: How??
G-teen, you fail to mention what music you are using to judge your system's depth capabilities. Both XLO and Chesky sell test CDs that have specific tracks for depth reproduction. As the above post detail, attention must be paid to room acoustics....
