Just getting started
Get a one box CD player with a variable output headphone out. I would suggest the Sony XA7ES or its predecessor, the 707ES, but I image there are others. Match it up with a Sennheiser or Grado headphone set and you'll have a very fine quality play...
CD players, one box or seperates?
Not a cut and clear situation. The advantages of 2 box can easily be offset by the disadvantages of the digital interconnect cable. At the the very high end, 2 box is definitely worth the effort. Well designs 2 box systems (including the digital c...
Disappointment
Only you can determine whether future upgrades are worth the time or effort. I would suggest you find a dealer who will let you do at home trails of equipment. However, before making any changes, carefully examine your room and speaker/listner set...
What length digital cable?
Coaxial digital cable should never exceed 2 or 3 meters.
Speaker wire - equal length or shortest?
Sumiko claims that their OCOS cables can be run with unequal lengths with no sonic consequences.
Integrated Amps: How Good?
I recently switched from Pass preamp/phono/power amp to a one box Rowland Concentra and I'm still smiling. I'm of the opinion that unless you have a special need (low efficiency, low impedance speakers), or you absolutely have to have the best, th...
SACD Dominates Recommended List
Ken, the cassette was the dominate recorded music format at the time of the CD's intro. Regardless, a multi-format future is all but inevitable. However, how different is that from today? I use vinyl, CD, SACD, cassette, FM radio and open reel tap...
SACD Dominates Recommended List
Twenty years ago the introduction of the CD was a distinct step backward as far as sound reproduction was concerned. Fortunately, within the last few years the CD format has sufficiently advanced to the point where it produces high quality playbac...
Krell Kav300i for Audio Physic Virgo?
I've not heard the Krell/Virgo combo, but I suspect it is not an optimal pairing. I also don't think the Krell is much, if any, an upgrade over the MF. I'm not knocking the Krell for it is a fine piece of well built equipment. Consider getting an ...
Need Help with System
Dan, please let me expand on my earlier comment. I believe your existing VPI/Rega setup is capable of very good sound reproduction. To substantially improve upon this setup will require more than your $3k budget, IMO. I still stand by my recommend...
Need Help with System
If I understand your system, you will be digitizing the analog output from the phono stage. If this is the case, then I'm not sure it makes much sense to substantially upgrade your turntable. I would recommend not spending more than $400-500 on a ...
I need the more better digital
Red book spec digital cannot provide you with what you are seeking. My advice is to go with a SACD player. The lack of music is a serious problem, but the sound quality is reputed to be better than any available red book playback. My experience wi...
REL Storm Setting for Maggie 1.6
There's no cut and dry response. The exact settings will depend on your room, speaker position and your sound preferences. Setting up a subwoofer is a long and tedious process. Use music that you are intimately familiar with that has strong mid-ba...
Album Sides
I agree with everything stated above, but one thing I do like about CDs is the remote control. I can skip any song I don't like, or repeat any song I do. I use a 5 disc changer as a transport and I typically set it on random play/all disc.
Mods to Transports/MSB Link
Contact MSB, their MSB Link output board is in production (according to my local MSB dealer). The board can be attached to nearly any DVD/CD player and the digital output will be reclocked and upsampled. It's designed to eliminate the transport fr...
