Commonly mentioned speaker brands? They are the favorites of certain people, for sure. Every speaker has strengths and weaknesses, plus the ol' beauty is in the eye of the beholder thing.
Speakers: Anything really new under the sun? Speaking of MDF, in the last few decades speakers have been developed with more ambitious cabinets in terms of construction and materials. Brands like YG, Magico and Rockport offer a refinement in sound that excludes MDF speakers, imo. While using...
Frequency Response The manufacturer specification and the the measured in-room response are different, and the decision to include of subs depends on the latter as well as the individual preference and ambition.
Verastarr Unseemly dealing is all too common in high end audio and reminds of how fringe this industry can be. I have had good customer service from Purist Audio. They do what they say.
What is Tight Bass? @johnnycamp5 Hi. With help from Acoustic Frontiers, I was able to flatten the bass response significantly by way of sealing the ports and subwoofer positioning. My main speakers were creating a 60Hz resonance on the vertical axis that a crossove...
An electrical engineer on how power cables can impact sound quality I have seen other interviews with Darren who strikes me as very earnest. Thanks for the link.
Flagship product to build around I like Voxativ speakers and amplification. Sure they're rolled off, but the tone is fantastic as are the bass modules. Holger usually partners his systems with Totaldac sources, so not so much thought required for great sound.
Law of Accelerated Returns Excluding time and effort and focusing on MSRP within model ranges, the least expensive is most commonly the worst value, ime. I actually hate to get to generalized about these things but believe law of diminishing or accelerating returns are both...
Is there any one piece of vintage gear you most wished you owned? Of all my gear I really like and hold the most complicated opinion about my Lamm L1. I would love to try an L2, but financially it is way down the to-do list.
Denver and Front Range furniture maker -- just did my audio rack! Wow, great deal at 1.2K. If was audio marketed, it would be 5 times that.
What is Tight Bass? I am all about the effect of ports or sealed speaker construction as well as amplification, but the room resonance is the biggest deal of all. Not just by way of speaker/subwoofer placement, but whatever can be done to flatten the frequency and de...
Will a new Dac improve the sound? I have a Cary 303, which I believe is older and more expensive than the cdp1. I use it as a transport for a bricasti m3. The m3 is a giant reduction in distortion from the 303 dac. Smoother and more detailed, a huge improvement. as a transport the...
Rate my system/advise A good preamp will make up for a bad preamp, but it will not make up for a not-so-great amp. Best of luck. Listen to what you have before buying more stuff, especially acoustics.
Experiment, Experiment; What have been your most successful finds? @jond Hi, I use REW: https://www.roomeqwizard.com/ along with a Dayton emm-6 microphone and a Focusrite usb interface, which is an ADC. The interface connects the stereo, the computer and the microphone. Also need a mic stand. There is a learn...
Experiment, Experiment; What have been your most successful finds? Along with the laser distance meter, I think REW or other acoustic measurement capability is accessible and a "must", especially for bass. There is no reason to do it by ear as the graphs easily translate in to audible changes. Similar to to art... |
