Can you put a Krell in an apartment?
I have an old KSA 50.  I don’t use it all the time, but love it nonetheless even thought it is bass heavy.Krells have a soft start so I don’t think you’ll have a problem unless you’re trying to make your ears bleed.  =)In my house (old four square...
McIntosh MA2275 - opinions
I’ve never heard the 2275, but having owned a ton of Mac gear, I do concur that your 22/275 set up would satisfy most anyone.  It’s an absolutely stunning combo.  I have a large collection of gear and rotate in and out all the time. There are a fe...
Carver M1.5t vs. Krell or ML
Update,The Phase Linear 4000 is back in the box.  It was fun.  Marantz is back to preamp duties.  The 24 pairs nicely with the KSA 50, which is a great amp to run on cold nights.  It will heat a small room.  =)N
Sansui 9090DB
I still have my 9090DB.  It’s the one preamp/amp that to me does everything right.  Yes, if it’s pristine it’s worth about $2500plus.  Hang on to it.  It will always sell, should you need too.N
Carver M1.5t vs. Krell or ML
This post inspired me to break out my ancient Phase Linear 4000 and Phase Linear 400 for a long term listen. The 4000 is the quietest preamp in my house.  That’s with the correlator switched out.  It is also the most dynamic.  The highs are crystal...
MA5300 - as a preamp
I used my old MA-6100 as a preamp briefly.  I also use my ancient marantz 1030 as preamp from time to time.. Those have much less power then the 5300.  My 6100 could meet its spec easily, but didn’t have much after its 70wpc.  Not so with the 5300...
Apogee Scintilla Power
I don’t have it anymore, but back in the 90’s, I drove my Apogees with a McIntosh MC-2300.  It ran them easily I might ad.  The Mac was rated safe to a half ohm, if I’m remembering correctly. The  only headache were Macs silly speaker screw termina...
Carver M1.5t vs. Krell or ML
I just love it when someone unilaterally starts bashing a product based solely on the name.  Really?  Anyone ever read the reviews of the Carver when it came out?  I don’t ever recall anyone calling it garbage, or lacking detail or power.  Can any...

Marantz Receiver Bad HDMI
Hmmm, marantz hasn’t really been marantz since Superscope sold them to Phillips in 1980.  The US offices where all design and engineering took place are long gone.  Today they are just another generic D&M holdings brand.Chuck it, and buy someth...
Top vintage receivers vs. modern high-end equipment
I’m in my late fifties and have has so much gear throughout the years it’s silly.  Mac, Pioneer, Sansui, Phase, Citation, Krell, Levinson, Crown, marantz, etc. Some pieces I’ve kept and swap in every now and then, but my go to does everything right...
What to do with broken McIntosh Pre-Amp
The MX-114 is a nice preamp/tuner.  It has the period traditional Mac sound and can be very pleasing to listen too.I have a marantz 7c, a 7T, and 24 which is a preamp/tuner and a very  early 1030 integrated with preamp outs (I only use it as a pre...
Left/right channel imbalance
Swap in a cheap cartridge and compare the balance.. It’s probably your cartridge.  Replace it or use the balance control to even it out.I had one once that I loved but the imbalance drove me nuts.. I gave it away, because adjusting the balance als...
How does the Phase Linear 400 compare?
jim55379,I have a Phase Linear 4000 series one preamp (I used to have a 4000 series two as well).  It has the widest soundstage I’ve ever heard. The deepest too.  It also excels in detail and dynamics like no other and is whisper quiet.  But I can...
How does the Phase Linear 400 compare?
transco,If you are ever in Suburbs of Chicago, look me up.  I’ll play my Phase Linear 400, through my marantz 7, and you can compare it to my Krell KSA 50 and newly acquired McIntosh mc-7300.  The Phase 400 is incredibly smooth and transparent.  T...
