Can anyone tell me where the progress in audio went?
It peaked somewhere around 1974..   N
Thorens 160 motor fix or replace?
I really liked my 160.  I currently use a Dual 1229 with a Grace 747 tonearm. The Dual motor is bullet proof.. but if you love the Thorens  look for either a donor motor or have one fitted. The motor from an LP12 could be use as an example and can...
Citation 11 Pre Amp question
They all have a champagne face.  The early ones have a bronze brushed finish behind the equalizer with black sliders.  The later ones are all champagne with champagne sliders. The early one is the one to have in my opinion, though either is a tre...
Dual 1219 spring suspension
Kinda wondering what’s wrong with the springs?  I have a modded Dual 1229 with a Grace 747 tonearm and love the spring suspension.  Having hardwood floors they absorb any foot fall vibration.  When I used to use an LP12, I couldn’t walk across the...
SAE or Luxman
The SAE Mark I preamp (all knobs..no sliders) was a wonderful sounding preamp.  I mean stellar!  The matching amplifier  was also excellent, though not very powerful.  (50 or 60 wpc I think)To me, Lux hit a ‘dead spot’ in the late seventies and mo...
Focal 1028+Mcintosh MC275
The 275 is a superb amp.  It will drive anything. It’s super smooth and has plenary of bottom end weight.  It’s also not as colored as other amps for this period.  (I’m thinking marantz 8, which is warmer on the top)I’ve never heard a bad Focal sp...
Klipsch Forte ii too bright, or is it my room ?
Really good thoughts, all of them.  Refreshing not to hear any “mid-Fi” comments as well.  Certainly with any system it’s a challenge to select the right speakers with the proper amplification.  You didn’t mention which pioneer you had.  Some late...
McIntosh MC2300 as a sub amp
I was thinking about the 2300.  I had one for years.  Aside from having enough power to drive anything, it was beautifully voiced.  If I remember right, it has a damping factor of 13!  So the bass on this amp has a tube/valve like character to it....
Repairing an early 70's Dual 1229 - Help?
I’ve rebuilt several, including the one I use daily with a Grace 747 tonearm. If you PM me I’ll walk you through it..N
Bob Carver C-500 worth restoring and/or upgrading??
Always a good idea to have it checked out, but if you brought it up on a variac you would probably be fine. The C-500 is basically the same as a Phase Linear 400 Series Two amp.  If it was properly stored it might not need anything done to it.N
Review: Marantz 7t Preamplifier
Old post I know. I own a 7T that was restored, and it sounds okay. Recently purchased and original 7T in pristine condition. Every component is original.  The sound stage is so deep, wide, and transparent that it has made me rethink ever restoring...
Adcom circa 1990 amp and preamp
Doesn’t surprise  me either.  I have plenty of friends with current high end rigs, and I personally think my system has more touch, tone and feel than anything my buddies own. I don’t really think that ‘new technology’ has advanced good sound to w...
McIntosh MC2300 as a sub amp
That is  my favorite Mac amp.  Try listening to it in stereo.  It’s fantastic.
For auld lang syne, ..high-end companies you really liked that are gone....
Dual, I use a 1229 idler driven turntable every day with a Grace 747 tonearm, it’s amazing. Advent, for their excellent speakers and cassette deck.  I still use a 201A cassette deck.  I think they have the best midrange of any cassette deck ever. ...
Aging Gear for Aging Ears
I have a hard time these days with ‘audiophiles’, since I no longer consider myself one.  Had all the high end gear, Mac system, Levinson system, Krell etal’. Then one day while moving hooked up an old Sansui receiver and a pair of EPI 100’s along...
