Do you ever miss vintage gear you no longer have? Yes, of course! I can’t believe I sold my Pristine Sansui 9090DB, or my McIntosh C-29, C-28, C-26 (the 26 is the one to have), or the MC-2300 (I miss it every day!), or my HK Citation 17, my EMT 927, my Pioneer RT1050, my Mark Levinson ML-2,s, my ...
Refurb GAS Grandson amp or put money towards another amp? Grandson is an amazing amplifier, one of the finest sounding amps I’ve ever heard. I would repair it. Any quality hifi repair shop can do the job. It most likely needs a recap. Keep it, it’s hard to do better for what a repair will cost.N
Tape deck repair in the Chicago area Call Ron. 708-244-9299. He’s really good. That’s his cell. You can text him.n
Fisher 500c vs. CJ Combo? The Fisher doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Fisher in the mid sixties was as prestigious as Mac, Marantz, Citation etc. It’s a wonderful sounding piece with plenty of power, so long as you’re not wanting to make your ears bleed.Fisher gets m...
The marantz sound? I never updated this post. I kept the marantz 24, it’s the sleeper out of the marantz line. (At least to me) The first preamp after the 7T, which I like but it doesn’t seem to have the soundstage or the low end of the 24. Neither does the 7 for...
Older Tuners, esp. Sansui Sansui built amazing tuners. Older marantz also made good tuners.I see no reason not to search for something late sixties early seventies and enjoy it.I too listen to jazz here in Chicago played from a local college which is fantastic for introd...
Old FM Tuners....O.K., Great or Folklore... Sansui made amazing tuners. The one in my 9090DB is outstanding. So is the one in my marantz 24 tuner/preamp, which I believe was built to compete with the excellent tuner sections of the McIntosh MX112 and 113 tuner/preamps.N
Any truth to my feeling that MM carts are possibly better than MC on rock recordings? Doug Sax probably knows what’s he’s talking about. I have so many cartridges, and I think $1100.00 is the most I’ve ever spent, but the one that gets the most play time by far is an early 80’s Nagaoka MP11 Boron. It does everything exceptionall...
Harman Kardon Citation XXP and Citation X-1 - Looking for information. Yeah, I remember reading about them in an old Stereo Review issue on the ‘High End’. Value? Just keep them And enjoy. They were designed by Matti Otala, and nothing at the time was as good sounding. At least this is what I’ve heard. N
O.K., the other end of your personal experience Buying a Linn Sondek LP 12, then experiencing upgrade Hell. What a total piece of crap. I’ve commented in detail through the years about my nightmare like experience. Makes me want to pour a stiff drink every time I think about it, that and the ...
Mac 1900 no volume up The 1900 like all macs is worth keeping. It certainly just needs a service. You could very well have a bad volume pot, which was typical of the 1700, the 1900, C-26, C-28, MA-6100 which all, share the same one if I’m not mistaken. Both aftermarket...
Sansui CA 2000 preamp I had one for years. Should sound glorious! Listen to it, then decide if it needs a recap. You know it does if it sounds dead, otherwise leave it alone.Enjoy!N.
Hafler DH-100 - what should this should this sound like? Everything David Halfler made sounded good. Somethings wrong.Hafler amps are clean, quite and smooth. I hope you get it sorted out. It’s a nice one.N
Vintage equipment sounds awesome Indeed! Currently being blown away by my marantz 24 preamp, which to my utter surprise sounds better than my 7T, and 7, with smoother mids and much better low end. Soundstage is surprising. This is a real sleeper. I’ve owned it for years and a...
Vintage ARxb turntable. Refurb or replace You can always replace the arm If you want, but I must say properly set up that’s an excellent table. Keep it.I use my 46 year old 1229 everyday. It’s my favorite component. The AR is likewise excellent. N. |
