What is the best solid state amplifier you have ever heard?
Hands down a McIntosh MC-2300.  I’m still kicking myself for selling it.  N
Vintage MC-75 restoration
Send them back to McIntosh.  They have an excellent service department and they are the manufacturer.  I’ve used them several times and of course the returned product is functionally as new.N
The Best Compliment You've Gotten On Your Rig?
Best compliment “I just pissed my pants”. After playing Ahmad Jamal live at the Montreal Jazz Festival 1985.  Opening track ‘Yellow Fellow’, on vinyl at concert level. I still laugh when I think about it. N
Carver, THE standard of excellence IMO
I’m and old hifi nut.  I’ve still own my 1976 Phase Linear 4000 preamp, and my 1976 400 amplifier, which is without question one of the quietest, most dynamic amps I’ve ever heard.  I’ve never had a problem.  I recently sent my 4000 out for a tune...
Cassette tape
I have several cassette decks, and it embarrassing to think of how many I’ve gone through, most of them three head high-end.I love cassette, and my favorite machines are a Nakamichi 500 and an ADVENT 201, which I think has the most glorious midran...
SME 3009 Series III Haters
I have the series One version which I paired with my Garrard 301.  SME arms are magic, just like all GRACE tone arms are.  I have a GRACE 747 on my Dual 1229, it likewise is amazing.Glad you’re enjoying it.  It’s a fine one.Norman

I used a16a/17 combo for years.  Fantastic preamp, and an excellent performing amp.  If you have two 16’s, they can be strapped for mono and put out more than 500 watts per channel all day long.  Download the tech manual to strap the amps.  It’s e...
Best cheapo Cartridge
iopscrlI agree.  I still have a Shure V15III.  I have also found the Pickering XSV 3000 to an outstanding cartridge.  So many to choose from.  N.
Why will no other turntable beat the EMT 927?
lewm,$5000.00 for a respectable 927 is an amazing deal.  Really, clean, lube and adjust and their ready for another 50 years.   I’m not saying that $30-40,000 is crazy, but isn’t it?  If that were pocket change to me I wouldn’t spend it on a turnt...
Why will no other turntable beat the EMT 927?
Mine came out of a radio station and was well used.  It didn’t have the 139st either. I’m surprised that you can find them for so low a price, but maybe?  If you’re in the market, I would certainly take a look because you never know.  The tech I u...
Best cheapo Cartridge
Chakster,Because to me the conical stylus sounds better, that’s why.  But that’s just what I like.  Probably why I’m such a big fan of the Denon 103 and the Yamaha MC-11.   Nagaoka cartridges are overrated?  Hmmm.  Never heard that before.  What e...
Best cheapo Cartridge
Chakster,Someone mentioned that the 150 or 200 series has the Boron cantilever. This will fit any MP cartridge except the 500. Personally, I prefer the conical stylus from the MP-10 for my vintage jazz Micro-groove LPs. I dont think there is much ...
Best cheapo Cartridge
ChaksterGoogle “Nakaogka MP-11 Boron”.This was a step up from the standard MP-11.  The cartridge body is Black and says BORON in gold letters on the front and sides. The stylus also says MP-11 Boron,so I am pretty certain that Nagaoka made one. Em...
Vintage Krell
I recently sold my KSA-50.  Had it for more than 15 years.  I loved the mid-range, but it was too bass heavy for long term listening, so it never got a lot of use. Listening to other Krells of the period, I felt all sounded similar.  Bass (and hea...
Best cheapo Cartridge
I have an old moving coil Denon 103, it’s a little dark for an MC, but the midrange is killer. My other favorite is the Nagaoka MP-11 Boron, which to me sounds almost exactly like the Denon.  The MP-11 is MM.   I’m not sure they make it any longer ...
