Preamp - 18 dB Gain too low? Trust the manufacturer's spec's, especially since they are consonant with your issues.
I don't like the sound of my system. Help please. Perhaps your speaker/listening position could be tweaked some to improve your frequency respponse as well as eliminating harshness etc. I think you are pushing the edge of what is possible out of SS components in a tough room, but if the speakers ...
Tubes going bad??? Simple and angst free method. Keep at least one set of spare tubes about. When you think your sound may be deteriorating insert the new tubes and see if there is a noticible difference (they should have about 24 hours to settle in). If you can't h...
A few basic tube questions Well, FWIW, while your assumption sounds logical, in practice it is meaningless, in your case especially. The Quicksilver uses two small tubes, one 12AX7, and one 6922. The Dodd uses two 6922's (or 6h30's). So what you can conclude from that is tha...
A few basic tube questions If you want to be successful and minimize your costs in finding the best tubes for your amp and pre-amp ity is recommended that you do nothing until you can answer the question "What sonically do you want to change about your system with your tube...
When does non-delivery become a crime? It could have been a fraud or it could have been bad business practices. Depends. More often than not a dealer will take yours and other customers deposits and use them to operate his business. If he is in financial trouble and doesn't have the mo...
Distorted Small tubes in pre-amp or amp are getting noisy, I suspect. I'd bet it was the pre-amp tubes but you never know. Leave the pre-amp off and listen to the amp with your ears close to the mid range/tweeter drivers. No noise? Then turn on the pre-amp ...
Preamp - 18 dB Gain too low? Nguyen 878, 4v sensitivity is quite low which I think was implied by Marakantz in his first post. A sensitivity between .5v and 1.5v is much more common and fairly high.
preamp with phono stage as a "phono module"? The way you are connecting it you will have 2 volume controls in the chain, one too many. Take the tape out from the PS audio and connect it to a line input on the other pre-amp. That should work fine.
Preamp - 18 dB Gain too low? 1 to 2 o'clock is just fine, in fact it may be the best postition to get the maximum performance out of your pre-amps volume control. 26db was common when vinyl was king and low output phono pre-amps were used. Amps also had lower sensitivity. Wit...
How do I smooth out violins? Along the lines of Brownsfan's comments on cable, which I suspect is fair comment. For a relative few bucks, you could buy Canare 11s4 speaker wire and Blue Jeans interconnect and for the near future eliminate cable issues as being a source of pro...
Can't bias tubes on amplifier I presume that this is the first time you tried KT88's and had not previously (before the first failure to bias) tried them. If that is the case, it is possible that the KT88 tubes you tried were just 'hot' tubes and that selection of selected/mat...
can I get your input on a inexpensive pre-amp I agree with Kbuzz. A used Joule Electra LA100 III would be a great 'used' tubed pre-amp. And, I think, does most every thing you want.
How do I smooth out violins? FWIW, since you seem to be dedicated to buying a tubed pre-amp I will restrain my self from comments on most other things, and comment on that issue.1) Be sure your selection is electrially matched to perform best with your amp, i.e. correct imped...
Volume level of ARC Ref 5 seems very high 160562. HUH? Not serious Hifi? Pray tell what exactly is 'serious HiFi'?Two pre's - BS. The Rothwell is a simple resistor put in the signal path with lots of others. Nothing more or less. You sound like someone advocating spending mucho bucks to s... |
