Which headphones??
Be sure to consider using a separate headphone amp which will drive your phones. This can make a huge difference. I'm using the Senn 598s and a small Fournier tubed amp (costs about $175 and is sold on E-Bay) in my TV room. Nice relaxed sound. I u...
Is soundstage just a distortion?
Al's comments are on point. Goeff's reference to the Opus 3 recordings, especially 'Depth of Image' makes me wonder though what would have happened if I had never heard that record over a system which had its soundstage capabilities optimized. I u...
Is soundstage just a distortion?
FWIW, I like Almarg's observations regarding ceiling (room) reflections of the very high frequencies as being a possible issue contributing to the illusion of height. I would add though that I think the volume (SPL's) might be as great a contribut...
Looking to Upgrade my CDP
Lowrider, FWIW I like Rrog's suggestion re having a 2d CDP that will accommodate older CD's, especially if it is a tubed unit because that allows you to tailor the sound to your system as well as the CD's themselves. Works for me. BTW, I've found ...
Greatest Composers of All Time
Brownsfan, Thanks for your response. Until Lewis I had been relying on Goode, Brendel and Perahia for most, but not all, of my Schubert. I've never heard Richter's recordings of Schubert - I checked and found the Argo disc's on Arkiv and have orde...
Greatest Composers of All Time
Learsfool, Thank you - I learned something today. I haven't listened to any symphonies by Mozart or Haydn in many years.
Is soundstage just a distortion?
Csontos, could you say the same thing about the difference between tubed and solid state stuff? Think, coupling digital and ss could be a perfect combination for 'definition', 'resolution', etc. Or not. :-)
Any ideas regarding Diagonal room set up?
No reason that your set up shouldn't sound great, but it might be improved if you space your speaker apart about the sme distance as it is to your sweet spot, i.e. 8 to 9ft. You might also try crossing the axis of your speakers 3 ft or so in front...
Greatest Composers of All Time
Schubertmaniac, Only slightly off topic, but since Schubert is your favorite composer I'll ask you - or anyone else who can respond for that matter. What do you think of Paul Lewis' recordings of Schubert's music for solo piano released in the last...
Greatest Composers of All Time
Learsfool, If you ever get the chance you might enjoy hearing Wagner performed in a small hall with period instruments as it would have during the times he composed. Enjoyable and informative. Hard to find though I think. Barry Wordsworth/New Quee...
Greatest Composers of All Time
I agree with Learsfool about the value of 'best' lists. Silly and at best fun. Ultimately, in most audio forums anyway, it is a value assigned with no foundation beyond which composer's music impresses that person at that particular time. The alte...
Is soundstage just a distortion?
Note that when you listen to your system 'out of phaase' that while the sound may extend beyond the sides of your speakers that it also looses center image specificity. This is not a 'distortion' as such coming from your system or the recording. S...
I was Tempted
I just love Eva Cassidy's voice and I too have all of her CD's. That being said, I really don't find the mix between Eva and the 'band' all that flattering to her role. I find the instrument accompaniment to be too forward and this takes away from...
Bass leaves after amp warms up?
Krellman, Well said. FWIW, I agree with I with you on all three points. One of the reasons I recommended the SPL meter was for the OP to see for himself that his problem was not with absolute volume level of the bass. He just likes his system's so...
Bass leaves after amp warms up?
Fishing, When you run your tests with the SPL meter, set up as Al suggested and using your test disc, be sure to chart your results on a graph. This will allow you to have visual evidence of the changes you experience and will serve as an easy ref...
