Tubes vs Solid State - Imaging, Soundstaging, 3D
What JMCgrogan2 sez, except in my experience some power tubes are more linear in tone than others. With those more 'linear' tubes, such as the GL KT88's or SED 6550's I would agree that small tubes can make a greater difference than the two power ...
Tubes vs Solid State - Imaging, Soundstaging, 3D
Not in my experience, but the use of words such as imaging, soundstaging, 3d, as well as your terms "image more sharply and offer the deepest, clearest field" are open to diverse interpertations often based on totally different and not necessarily...
Do you indulge when listening to your rig?
FWIW, another plug for the value of roasting your own beans. One of the things that had always bothered me about commercially roasted beans was that in order to avoid the acidic and burned flavor of strong black coffee you had to drink it hot. Lik...
Tube amp heat questions...
Probably has more to do with how the amp is designed in the first place and how far the design pushes its tubes to develop its rated power. For example you can get 80 watts out of four 6550 tubes but they are close to max output. The same tubes in...
Do you indulge when listening to your rig?
Donjr, Now all you need to do is source, blend, and roast your own beans. I'll never go back to commercially roasted beans. The differences dwarf coffee pot and grinder issues. Bit of a learning curve though. :-)
why do cd players "sometimes" not read a disc?
Often it is because the laser has become dusty/dirty and a simple cleaning will take care of the problem.
Norah Jones
Schubert, FWIW, IMHO, if your 'wisdom' were food for thought I think many of us would starve to death. But I do think reflection on your presentation of your opinions is a lesson from which much can be gained. Even by yourself.Donjr, I'm late on t...
Using Dipole Speakers in a Stereo System
Broadstone, FWIW re stereo v mono, one of the differences that you hear when you are listening in mono is that in mono you are not getting reproduction of the out of phase information in the recording which will appear in stereo playback, and is o...
Longish speaker cable
Belden 10 gauge cable sold by Blue Jeans @ about $1 per ft. Best bang for the buck AFAIK. Only down side is that it is not shielded but for most that is not an issue I think.
Cayin 300B integrated amp-popping sound
A lot of 'popping/static' sounds are caussed by poor pin contact. To begin your search I would first eliminate this possibility by cleaning the pins. If it continues thereafter, I would switch tubes from channel to channel and see if the sounds ch...
New on audiogon
Re Wadia - FWIW I ran a 302 CDP direct and thru a pre-amp (using an integrated which allows the separation of the amp/pre-amp sections and electronic switching). I was able to do A/B comparisons. The main difference I detected was tonal which was ...
Song With Best Beginning
Somewhere Over the Rainbow when performed by Eva Cassidy. Very, very, moving I think. Judy Garland's version, a classic, is too romantic for my taste. I find that Eva's intro, and her whole treatment as well takes this out of the childhood fantasy...
Prima Luna vs jolida
Re Cayin - distributor and manufacturer support is dismal!I have two (2) A100T amps, about 4 years old which had identical failures. Manufacturer will not communicate at all. The distributor USA - Steve at VAS had never returned calls. When contac...
Popcorn Ceiling vs Smooth
You should get some diffusion of the higher frequencies with a pop corn ceiling but unless you have really high res stuff, an optimized listening room, really well developed listening skills, and are a bit on the anal side of neutral, you would pr...
room makes or breaks
Now you've got the idea! Run with it. Maybe, with a little (or a lot) of research into the proper set up of a stereo system and room acoustics, you can improve it even more. There are books written on the subject and a lot of folks about who have ...
