General question about tube preamps and gain
gochurchgo, FWIW I think your experience re systems sounding fuller at higher volume is not unusual, but I believe it has much more to do with the speakers than one's electronics. Most noticeable  in the bass  but also in the soundstaging which re...
CAL Alpha produces brutal gain
FWIW, the 'in line attenuators'  I referred to are in fact resistors encapsulated into a 'plug' which you insert between the RCA cable and RCA output. Not as elegant or,  probably,  precise as  putting resistors into the Alpha, but a lot cheaper a...
CAL Alpha produces brutal gain
Check out the tubes in the Alpha. Lots of times these tubes, when changed by prior owners, can have too high a gain, such as EI 12AX7's (no longer in production). I believe it is possible to use a 12AU7 or a 12at7, which have lower gain. I use new...
Classical Music for Aficionados
jcazador (and others of like mind) Your comment to me on 10/6 "...peaceful, my kind of music" caused me to think of you when I finished listening to my most recent acquisition. This is a recording by Lara Downes on Steinway & Sons titled "For ...
Why discussions generate into personal affronts...
Pride of product, pride of opinion, low self esteem, jealousy, ignorance, all work well in producing the posts to which you object. Personally I just ignore those threads or posts. Life is too short for me to waste my time on them. I doubt that th...

RV, do you think this accounts for the resemblance to his Symphonic Dances? Interesting that his 1st symphony could be so similar to his last (symphonic) works. Wonder how his unreworked version would compare to the Symphonic Dances. BTW, the Symp...

jcazador, Although not likely, if you missed Ashkenazy’s Preludes you might like to give them a listen. I  like them a lot. -)

jcazador, You might also enjoy his performance of Shostakovich's  Aphorisms, op 13. available on a Decca CD. It's quite good. FWIW I'm  a Askenazy fan,  both as a pianist as well as a conductor, especially in  Rachmaninoff's and Sibelius' music.

I overlooked these PC's by Zimmerman and Ozawa as well. Wild and Horenstein's performances of all four have been my 'go to' versions for years. Yet, I've not hesitated to order a new CD on your recommendation.  I have Liszt's PC's by the same forc...
Buzzing through speaker's tweeters - PrimaLuna Dialogue Two Integrated
The fact that you can change the volume of the buzz suggests to me that your problem is not the Primaluna. The volume control attenuates the incoming signal so the problem is upstream from the Primaluna. Since both phono stages that you are using ...
A question for fans of Threshold amplifiers
There are many vintage Threshold amps. IMHO, the models really worth having today because of the high(est) level of performance, then and now, would be the SA series 1, 2, and 3. Unfortunately they don't come up often and are expensive when they do.
Confused Musical Presentation
Elizabeth, FYI higher end ear aids usually can have multiple programs to match your hearing. So they say. You can have a program for speach and for, say, live music.  But IMHO under the best of circumstances they are not going to give you audio ne...
Confused Musical Presentation
FWIW your problem might be solved with an equalizer. Not to increase the highs so much as to reduce the lower ranges to bring your sound back into balance.
Audio Research VT100 MK1 and LS15 HELP!!!
Well I did a little on line reading regarding your speakers which causes me to suspect the combination of your ARC stuff and the KEF may be your problem. Your speakers seem to be considered ’neutral speakers’ (at best). You seemed to like them whe...
Audio Research VT100 MK1 and LS15 HELP!!!
Firstly, I overlooked your comments about the LS15 going into protection frequently. This could well be the result of the V3 6922 flashing/sparking. If the LS 15 doesn't require re-biasing you can easily change this tube yourself with like kind an...
