help with tubes
New or used? How much power do you need (we all don't have GMA's). Personally, I'd rather spend my $1300 on a used high quality amp than any of those you mentioned.
analog newbie question/vinyl weight
One of the down sides is that it makes it virtually impossible to settle in on one VTA - thats hard enuf to achieve if you have just one thickness. Other than that I think the real benefits from thickness are overstated - I'd rather see greater qu...
Oracle turn table
Cocotte, There is a benefit to having an unsuspended table. I like the CONCEPT of not having to tune the suspension and having the motor completely isolated from the TT. Additionally it gives me another choice when selecting arms.
Speakers along short or long wall
FWIW I don't think any test disc is really going to give you the information you are looking for if what you want to determine is on which wall to put the speakers. I think the difference between the two locations is, as much as anything, how you ...
What does mono "bridged"
Eldartford, Didn't mean to suggest that at all. I was trying to give the simplist of answers possible re the effect of bridging a stereo amp. There were no express or implied instructions about how to do it, when to do it, or how to use one. I was...
How to track down bad tube and what can it mean?
My hat's off to you!!!!! Talk about a mistake that would be hard to own up to, most folks would be running around looking for a place to bury that one. You're on the honor roll for honesty, if nothing else. :-)
What does mono "bridged"
That is a method used to convert a stereo amp to a mono amp where the power of the two channels is combined into one.
Matching an amp to speakers for beginners?
One step at a time. Pick your speakers, then pick your amp. Tell us what speakers you would like to use and give us the spec's (for those of us too lazy to look them up) and you'll get some specific recommendations.....Oh, also give us some price ...
Can we have an "Ask Sean" catagory?
Well, now for the bad news. I have it on good authority that Sean will not reappear in these forums. :-(
Can we have an "Ask Sean" catagory?
FWIW Sean was not banned because Larsky complained - he was banned because he took out an Ad in which he made some caustic remarks about the establishment. It was very much an "in your face" statement, and as much as I appreciate the help Sean has...
How to track down bad tube and what can it mean?
I'm facinated with the fact that the hum level varies with the level of the music - the reason is that the tubes in the line stage and amp are constant and merely pass on, amplified, what passes thru them. Question - does this problem occur with a...

You've got to get a wee can of penetrating oil at the local hardware store. Put a drop on each screw and the little green men will back off and let you inside that SP10. Whats life without a few challenges. :-)

If you are hearing crackling/hissing without touching the dials it is not likely that it is the contacts in the volume or balance controls. If you hear it more when the amp is first turned on and it diminishes as time passes, like 30 minutes or so...

I'm sure you've figured this out, but the axis of the speaker is on a line perpendicular from the face of the speaker. On axis the speaker would be facing you. Crossing the axis of the speakers in front of you has the principle befit of reducing s...

Jafox, I have absolutely no argument with your anaylsis of the relative merits of these pre-amps. If I were in the market today for a better line stage the LS5 would be at the top of my list. Don't laugh too much, but I find that my little EAR834L...
