How important is a flat response?
Sean, If the reason we have stereo systems is to be able to listen to music and if we agree that we would like it to be as realistic as possible why would we want "flat frequence response" at the listening position? Most recordings are close multi...
Coupling vs. Decoupling for Bass Response
We think alike......some random thoughts - I would experiment with some simple dense padding such as used in workshops to keep your feet off the cement floors, its very cheap, comes in large sheets and is only about 1/2 inch thick. If it helps at ...
Tube amps for classical music FU29 vs EL34
Personally, I wouldn't get too anal about the supposed differences between EL34's and KT90's (or 88's, or 6550's). IMHO its far more about the design of the amplifier these tubes are used in. One of the limiting factor of EL34's is that they produ...
My first house Just how bad of a room? 12Wx14Lx8H
Wadda you want for free - English is my 4th language (so it seems)! :-)
My first house Just how bad of a room? 12Wx14Lx8H
Wow, lot of stuff for a small room. I suspect you may want to revisit your expectations as well as the type of speakers that you use. You will probably find that lengthening the room to 17ft will help the bass response. You will probably also conc...
Where do I go from Eva Cassidy?
One of the few new jazz singers that I have been very impressed by is Rene' Marie - she has a great voice and sings in an upbeat style. Give a listen to her album, Live at Jazz Standard on MaxJazz. She ain't Cassidy, she isn't plowing new ground o...
window near my listening point and excessive bass
Your bass problem could not be caused by your window and damping behind your listening position is not going to help with the bass (upper mids and highs, yes). Your bass problems are likely inherrent in the size of the room, but could be aggrevate...
Sistrum or Neuance or...?
Actually, Flex, I think it is sort of amusing that the Sistrum folks are continuing to use this thread to advance their product. Anyone making fresh product inquiries will stumble upon it and have plenty of advance notice of the contrversies invol...
Got my very first system. What's my next move?
What GREAT advise you have been getting! I'm both amazed and agree. I'd spend every buck you have reserved on music (and your dad). Don't get caught up in trying to improve your system yet with tweeks - you can spend a lot for marginal results in ...
Tube Amp Hum
You don't mention if the hum is from the speakers or the amp. I had one of these on loan and the amp itself gave off a hum, not a transformer hum, but sort of like a hum from the tubes resonating (?), that could be heard from the listening positio...
Recommendation for marching, war classical music.
I echo Aceto - Get some War Pipes, ala the Marching tunes in Braveheart - that should get your blood up. Ever wonder why bagpipers always march? To get away from the music.
Sistrum or Neuance or...?
Well, just for the sake of prospective, someone just listed a pair of Sistrum stands for sale on the 'Gon. Guess they must not be everybody's cup-a-tea, but personally I think the guy is probably just deaf. :-)
Does Your System Sound Like the Real Thing?
Of course it sounds LIKE the real thing! Do you think I would have spent all that time and money just to get some poor replica of the real thing? Now if I could just take it the last hundred miles and have it BE the real thing. :-)
What's the oldest piece of gear in your system?
ARC SP10II Preamp - 20 years old.Accuphase 101 Tuner - 27(?) years old.Everything else is between 6 and 10 years old. I don't change my stuff much - guess I aught to give up on this hobby now and just listen to music :-)
How long for tube break in
Foxtrot, Mechanically speaking, it all depends on how your amp is set up. Review your instruction manual.
