Not a ground loop hum??? Your hum could easily be residual hum from the tube pre-amp, although in my system it sounds more like tube rush/hiss. Do I assume correctly that this hum is well below the level of the sound of the music you are playing? Tapping the chassis, prob...
small room speakers You are right about the SE model of the LS3/5A. Read the reviews before you decide if you want the old model or the new model. Sonically there are differences which are not universally seen as an improvement. Many folks find it a bit brighter than...
small room speakers If you listen near field and don't want your speakers to be over analytical you should investigate Spendor LS3/5A's. This design has been popular for over 25 years and for good reason.
Hi-Fi test Tireguy, Totally agree, except re Eva Cassidy. His system could be fully mature and need no further tweeking, but if one doesn't respond to Eva Cassidy (even on a boombox) then its the emotional aspects that need further work, a lot of it! :-)
Gain matching in a biamped system. Depends on your tolerance for the difference in respective sound levels. Electronically it makes no difference. Personally I wouldn't settle for less than a perfect match, but some folks might like a bump up in the lower end of 1 or 2 db's.
Stress on Solid State Amps IMHO its just "owned by a LOL" stuff; and probably just BS. I've been seeing a lot of that lately in the ads. Nothing is used more than 200 hours and all gently - oh yeh! Caveat emptor as always.
Correlation: Money and Good Sound You only get what you pay for (if you are lucky)! Its what you do with it that counts. Stehno's comments are right on point.
Speaker Grills?? Sean, I believe you are right - but it wasn't the Theil I had in mind, but then on the other hand........
Speaker Grills?? Kids, pets, & WAF = grills on.Best sound = grills off, unless the speakers were designed to be listened to with the grills on - some speakers have a high end which is designed to be heard thru grills.
Distance from the speakers to the seating position As a starting point I use a 10 to 11 ratio (10 for the distance between speakers and 11 for speaker to listener position). Probably pretty close to Beavis' recommendations.
EL34 tube recommendations For a somewhat less bright sound than the Tesla's you might try the Svetlana's (C logo) for new production tubes these are my favorites and they are inexpensive.
4ohm, 8ohm speakers and output power Sean, FWIW to others who like tubes but are not aware, your point on amp/speaker matching is right on. One of the big priorities I set when I was matching speakers and amps was getting speakers with a minimum impedence of 5 ohms and 8 ohms nominal...
audio research or wife Man, if the ants can't stand your music (system) and have to vacate.......How do your dogs or cats react? I've always thought that with tubes you wouldn't even be able to get your friends to leave, let alone ants. :-)
4ohm, 8ohm speakers and output power Nope. First of all, there is no such thing as an 8ohm or 4 ohm speaker. What you have is a speaker with a nominal impedence of 4 or 8 ohms. The actual impedences varies considerably throughout its range. Some nominal 8ohm speakers have droops in t...
what does "too dark" mean It probably means that the person speaking likes his sound on the warm side of neutral or, that he likes the top end rolled off, but that what he is hearing is too warm or too rolled off FOR HIM. Remember dark to some means warm and to others it m... |
