What to listen for?
If you want to get the best reference (that I'm aware of) to judge the stereo imaging of your system there is none better, IMHO, than a compilation of cuts from several recordings on the Opus 3 label. Title 'Depth of Image'.  This was originally o...
A$$ & Ears
I use and recommend the Ekornes recliners. When upright my ears are exactly the same height as the tweeter in my speakers (37"). The comfort level is superb for long term listening, reading, etc. There are several models and they do 'sit' differen...
Bi-Wiring
No such thing as 'over kill' I think, but perhaps not at all necessary. :-) But to hear the differences make sure both wires are the same ga. My runs are longer and I have only used 10 ga.
Bi-Wiring
Well I found I could change the tone but the change I obtained was never better, just different. I was trying to tame the higher frequencies of some speakers without really impacting the overall balance. Didn't work but it did, ultimately, lead me...
Bi-Wiring
I don't know why I didn't think of this but for the adventurous amongst you bi-wiring folks who like to play with your sound you can try two different things, one to affect imaging, one to affect tone. Re tone, use two different types of cables, r...
Speaker placement.
I’m in a 13.5x19.5 rectangular room. I prefer my speakers on the short wall 9ft apart and listening about 10 ft back. Speakers are 6ft from the wall behind them. Listening chair is about 4 ft from the wall behind it. Speakers toed in slightly. I m...
AR Classic 60 Bias Confusion
32.5mv x 2 =65mv. Logic suggests to me that each tube is biased for 32.5 mv but perhaps with this amp you must bias two tubes at the same time, i.e. the setting would be for 2 tubes, 65mv.. I don’t know about your amp specifically but, for example...
Bi-Wiring
IMHO the main benefit in biwiring speakers using two wires from your amp going to four connectors on the speaker is that you eliminate the need to use a piece of metal between the two positive and two negative connectors on your speaker which is a...
ARC LS25 MkII preamp - Phono amp?
When you say 'turntables' are you thinking deck/arm/cartridge? If so I think you will not have to worry much that it will challenge your CDP. But, I can't fault your logic. Personally, with your budget constraints, you might get the chance to find...
How does a speaker blow out?
The difference between triode and ultralinear is not going to be enuf, I think, to protect your speakers when your blasting away. Depending on your stuff the difference might be only about 3db. Save your speakers, your ears, and your neighbor's go...
Opinion: Modern country is the worst musical genre of all time
I grew up with hillbillies and hillbilly music (in rural New England, actually part of the Appalachian chain I guess). Rarely missed a square dance or a touring singer. I dropped out for a while - when I came back I found it had been replaced by B...
ARC LS25 MkII preamp - Phono amp?
Its a line stage only. You need to get a separate phono stage - your selection of that will depend on your choice of turntable, tone arm, and cartridge, as well as your sonic preferences (if that is important to you). Oh yeh, and your budget! :-)
Are you getting the bass you deserve?
Yep, happy as a clam. :-)
Tube or solid state
FWIW I always prefer the smoothness available from a tube amp, not so much a solid state amp. But then I've not tried them all. Interestingly I've recently tried a SS preamp (in lieu of 30+ years with tubed pre-amp and haven't missed the tubed pre...
Inter Connects - What I know and don't know
Perhaps it would help if you explained why you are referring to criteria relating to speaker cables when you should be focused on the balanced cables between your source (pre amp?) and your new (to be) amps? Or am I just missing something?
