Are passive preamps better?
I've always wondered, when discussing passive pre-amps, with and withoput transformers, what is the effect of a passive pre-amp without transformers, which has a varible output impedence from 50K ohms to near 0 ohms at max volume rotation, a point...
Are bad rooms keeping the hobby alive?
Yep. While a poor room can be a insurmountable problem, more often its just poor set up originating out of a 'decor' priority over-riding an audio priority, or just simple ingnorance about the value of proper set up. It is evident in many system p...
What is the best place to buy tubes?
Check out AudioAsylum for recommendations. I'd suggest that Jim McShane would be an outstanding source for both popular tubes, testing, and for followup service.
Listening for tube degradation
I 'work', when I actually do, out of my home. I turn my 'casual' system on at about 7AM and turn it off at about 4PM every weekday. So, on this system, I change my power tubes in my amp at least once a year.I have a second 'system' (different elec...
Listening for tube degradation
Treat your tubed components just like you do your car. Simply put them on a maintenance schedule and routinely replace the tubes accordingly. I replace power tubes at about 2000 hours. This takes care of incurring a serious loss of sonics, or majo...
New speaker placement
Without a view of the side walls, back walls, and some indication of where your sweet seat is located its kinda tough, but assuming your listening chair and speakers are triangulated, close to equalaterally, and stereo imaging, especially depth of...
Are passive preamps better?
Sure. Especially when you match most tube pre-amps with SS amps. One must be careful to make sure the pre-amps output impedence is sufficiently low to properly drive SS amps which often have low imput impedences.
Are passive preamps better?
BTW, I failed to note in my post above, I have been using a Wadia direct to an amp and one thing has become clear from my experimenting with it thru a passive and active line stage. The active line stage was additive and the passive was subtractiv...
to ground or not to ground
Why do you say your equipment is not grounded? Have you defeated the ground phase prong on your plugs or used cheater plugs etc. FWIW, in my experience, defeating the ground, only makes the system sound better if it eliminates a ground loop. I'm a...
Are passive preamps better?
FWIW, because of Johns comments, I must say that I've used passive's with tube amps and can't say that I ever found anything about them that made them preferrable to a good active amp. Its too easy to lose the sources dynamics because of poor matc...
Hum in ARC Ref 3 not on 0 but 1-103 light buzz
A "light buzz" could be a light ground loop. Try a cheater plug on the amp and see if it goes away. BUT, I don't think that is the problem. A "sea whispering' noise is classically the 'noise floor' of the pre-amp or a couple of critical tubes whic...
Reaching the top and stoping
It took about 25 years to find them, but I think my Silverline Bolero's have found a new, and permanent, home! I just can't seem to fault them. Nothing else is particularily safe if I get bored enuf, but I'm fairly happy with my set up right now. ...
Modern day female jazz recommendations
Foster 9, And how would Freelon sound compared to three of my recent favorites Butler, Marie, and Stallings, stylewise anyway? If she is anything like these I'll check her out. :-)
E.A.R. Acute Reliability
This response has nothing to do with the Acute CDP - I've never seen it let alone heard it. However Tim P's response to the inquiry about the lack of an instruction sheet or manual is, I think, a good reason to do so to the extent that it sounds c...
